GQ rear wheel bearings query.
GQ rear wheel bearings query.
While my GQ was up on a hoist for a change of swivel hub bearings the other day I decided to turn the rear wheels by hand and found that both rear wheel bearings have a bit of a rumble to them.
I've checked out the prices from Don Kyatt and they have quoted $257 (inc GST) for a bearing kit (disc brake rear) but this is for one side only. I queried them that this was definitely for only one side and they confirmed this so it's going to be over $500 to do both ends just in parts!!!!!!!!!!
I was wondering if anyone else has replaced their rear wheel bearings and found a cheaper alternative.
Has anyone sourced bearings from a bearing supply company and if so do you have any part numbers which I can quote to ensure I get the correct ones.
Any help would be appreciated.
Regards Andrew.
ps: Perhaps someone has some for sale at a reasonable price

i'm currently doing mine on a mk but dinner break mmm... burito's
if you can do the work yourself it shouldn't cost much at all. You might find the bearings will need to be pressed off & on thou
take the axle out and take it to a axle / drove shaft place and get em to do it. Then buy new axle seals, bung em in and jobs done
Its really that simple

Mark2 wrote:I was quoted about half that from my local bearing place. (Gympie Bearing Supplies) . You shouldnt need any part numbers, they will be able to cross reference the model number.
Did the same thing myself last year and the ended up paying around $140 for each side. Simply rang around bearing suppliers in Sydney and as Mark2 wrote they simply cross referenced them against the cars model number.
Andrew,
did that price include inner and outer oil seals and the distance piece by any chance?
I cant find any old receipts for bearing prices, but i did get a bearing part# off a spare axle shaft in the garage which i replaced the bearings in a few years ago.. NTN bearings were the bearings, Bayswater bearings supplied at the time.
NTN 4T-CRI-0966
This part# was off the inner bearing--i'm fairly certain that the outer bearing is the same size--the inner and outer bearing cups are all one piece. Make sure you've got a good strong press and a suitable sized ring spanner to remove the retaining nut. If you go to all the trouble, replace the oil seal while your at it.

Nick, the guy from Kyatt's said the kit contained 1 bearing, 2 oil seals and 1 O ring. He made no mention of a distance piece (whatever the hell that is )
Thanks for that part No, I'll check out some local bearing places for availability.
As for a good strong press, the guys in the workshop next door to us, use our press for the Nissan rear wheel bearings because theirs isn't strong enough
Bazzle seeing as we're a metal fabrication workshop, we should be able to find an oxy set somewhere
Thanks everyone for the info.
Regards Andrew.

That sounds right--The bearing race looks like a short tube with tapers in either end for the 2 bearings to run on, which go in either end. The distance piece presses onto the axle, right up against the flange, and is what the outer oil seal runs on. When i changed mine over, this piece was pretty badly scored. The 2 oil seals will be, the inner and outer seals--smaller goes in the end of the axle case, and larger in the bearing housing. The o-ring seals the bearing housing to the axle case.

Are u sure they are buggered???
Can u hear them while driving the vehicle?
Don't want to doubt you but i have replaced many of these that people insisted were buggered and when apart they look like new. These bearings are almost indestructable and dont generally require servicing.
Just be sure they are buggered before you go and spend the money. It cant hurt to double check.

Well if russell is the objective here then why not go old skool methods and wrap the bearings in rags and smash the race off then get the trusty cold chisel and split the inner collar - no luck upgrade chisel to 4" angle grinder then go back to the chisel!!! Still no luck - cry cause you got nothin....And you wonder how does he know such a russell method....I used to own a toyota!!!

Do you old buddy
How long should you expect to get out of rear wheel bearings, mine have never been serviced since Ive had it, and it appears a vagina to get them out to grease..
Bogged, I have a small grease gun with a point on it, this is how I regreased mine, I just pressed the grease between the rollers. I was lucky as the axle seal had worn which washed the grunge out. This is a cheats way but it worked & as the greas had gone I had to do something. I didnt fancy replacing a bearing which was ok.

Well, I bought the bearing kits today for both sides for far less than that quoted by Don Kyatts. $135 per side versus $257 per side.
I got them from South Coast Bearings in Seaford (VIC) and they were a boxed CBC kit with bearing and oil seals. The bearings are NTN bearings made in Japan so aren't a Chinese/Korean POS set.
It has been suggested to me to use a genuine Nissan oil seal for the difficult to remove one where the bearing has to be removed as the genuine ones are of better quality.
I don't know if this is the case so I thought that someone here may have an opinion either way.
Regards Andrew.

I'm not sure when I'll be doing it yet Bruce. A friend of mine did his a while ago and he has a large press so I may change them at his place in Nyora. He's also got the expertise as he builds and services rally cars.
