3.5l rear diff lock.
Moderator: -Scott-
3.5l rear diff lock.
I've just come back from "City Parts Plus" in Zillmere (Brisbane.) They are wrecking an NJ Exceed, complete with rear diff lock - for those who might be interested?
The diff was there this morning, disc to disc, and I found the "diff lock" switch rattling around in the cabin. If anybody is interested their number is 07 3865 2900, but be ready to argue. Their Mitsubishi "expert" reckons the lock won't work without the transfer case, they won't separate transfer and transmission, and they want "about $2500" for the lot.
Cheers,
Scott

re
Gearbox, transfer, complete rear end disc to disc including locker for $2500..... Fawwwk, thats cheap..... Considering the locker alone would be $1500....

Thats a good price really.
The cheapest I can get a 3.5 V6 5sp is $1400 and the t/case $550.
So an extra $550 for the disc to disc rear end is a bargain.
Whoever grabs it make sure they grab all the wiring, compressor, 4x4 ECU & switch.
In reality you only need the compressor, diff centre, wire it up to a ARB switch so it can work at any time and get one axle shortened as Ian & Grant showed.

I just luv my "clacker Jabber"
NJ SWB,
Do they want to sell the lot or will they sell the rear diff separate?
I'll need the rear diff locker as I already have gotten into some major poo with the front locker (switch diff lock off if you need to turn!).., and can't wait to see how much more I could get into with all wheels pushing
Thanks for remembering, Grant
PS any further news on the 3.5l v6 manual crawler gears? ie can I buy some yet?

Hi Ado
They claim you won't make the rear diff work without the transfer, and won't separate transfer and transmission (auto.) If you can convince them you know how to make the lock work without their transfer case you should be able to get just the diff, plus whatever other bits you really need. Hopefully somebody here can give you a run-down on what's essential, and what you can work around.
I thought around $1k would get you what you need?

re
all you need is the complete centre, drivers side axel and compressor. Dont use the factory switch, buy an arb one as its a heap easier to wire up. They are on drugs if they think you need the box and transfer. It is really that easy!
Give em a call and get your locker...!!!

Thanks lads,
I've rung the number supplied by NJSWB and they are willing to split up the car and sell the bits I need - the problem is that they don't know what I'm talking about soooo..,
I don't s'pose I could ask a favour......,
If I can get a resonable price going at the wrecker, could one of you go to this wreckers and point out which bits I want, please?
I want the diff centre, right axel, little air pump, and tubing from pump to diff centre
Ado (drooling)
PS - are the auto diffs the same ratio as the manuals??

Woo hoo I can't believe I'm this close to getting the rear diff lock
Ado
Jees I hope my wife doesn't get wind of this!

Ado,
The compressor is under the rear drivers side seat , in the compartment, its held in place with 3 small bolts.
Its easy to get out but a bugger to put back in. Make sure they test it before you buy it. Otherwise I gues you could use a pressure reduction valve & use your ARB comprressor. The original one runs at about 5 PSI.
The left axle is about 7mm shorter than the standard axle. You could grind off the extra with an angle grinder, or if you wanted to be flash use a metal drop saw.
There is no way you could get the axle resplined as the meat is not there since the splines are actually larger than the axle shaft.
If you plan on using the switch in the diff to illuminate your dash light , make sure that the switch actually works first, mine didnt & I only found out after I had installed the diff centre. It was $90 for a newie.
To power the switch in the diff use a loop from one of the wires in the body harness that you will find near the diff compressor compartment, I think it was the blue/white one from memory. That way your indication circuit is separate from your compressor circuit.
I originally used the original dash locker switch to run the compressor (you need to use a latch relay if you go this way) but since I got the ARB front locker I am using ARB switches now to keep the look all the same.
The ARB switch is about $16.
If you have any trouble , you can contact me

Good luck!
cheers

Grant,
Yeh roger the price of the axel, also the frieght company wanted and additional $50.00 to move the axel ( because of it's length )
The prices are as follows
Diff $650.00
pump $50.00
Freight $140.00
Totals $840.00
Not too bad - I guess - i have been quoted $1500.00 just for the diff!
Ian
Thanks for the info on the diff installation - if I read you right the pump goes under the flap (where the jack is on the passenger side) under the drivers side of the rear bench seat (not the 6th and 7th dicky seats)
Thanks again for your help
I'll ket you know if it all comes off!
Question to anyone with the factory set up - can the diff lock be engaged anytime or can it only be engaged when your in 4WD?
Ado
PS have to change my profile again!

Yeah, I can wire it to work in any mode - just thinking of my wife dropping her purse on the switch and locking the rear diff in the hungry jacks car park or something!!
I might just hook it in with the front locker, which I've wired to be disabled in 2WD mode

Hello
Just a final note you can't cut down the standard axel to fit in the NJ the core of the spline stops the axel from going fully home
You have to get the correct exel
Ado
It's all in and working fine
