Diff ratio's on the MQ?

Post by JohnySWB »

Hi Guys,

First time calling to the forum and found there is a good amount of knowledge being spred around.
Hopeing to get some of the good stuff on a 1983 MQ swb 5 speed with the 3.3 lt turbo diesel.
The rear diff is shagged , last owner got some water in it and left it.
Ive being looking around for a second hand diff but can only find LWB wrecks around.
So the question is, is the ratio's the same or the differant to the SWB.

I was told GQ's were the same in the shorty's to the long wheel base, does the same go for the MQ's

MQ SWB and LWB have the same ratios.
Where u get hooked up is that the deisels / petrols of varios year models have different ratios.

Yours being a sd33 Turbo will have either 4.6 or 4.3 to 1 ratios in it, though its nearly impossible to tell without pulling her apart......

screwy

Thanks for the info screwy, it would'nt be as easy as matching up year for year would it.

Thinking about it!! If I took the chassi number in to a nissan dealership they mite be able to tell me spec info on the vehicle.Maybe to the point of diff ratio ,perhaps worth a go.

Cheers John.

Well if u get a Turbo desiel that is of the same year, then there is a high possibilitiy it would be the same ratio.
Then again, u could change out both centres and be sure :)

if it was before the 7/83 i could just about be sure it will be a 4.3, that being said if you are going to change it buy front and rear 4.6, will give you room for growth on tyre size in the future.... they should only set you back arount 100 bucks each, 150 each if you buy complete diffs and will have heaps of spares

Thanks for the help Guys,

To make matters worse the ol-girl is a jap import which may stuff the theory up.
Sounds like there is only one way to be sure and thats striping the buggers out and checking them.

Thanks John.

Its really not that big a job to drop the diff out. I recon I could confortably remove and reinstall in 2hrs. You'll find the ratio stamped on the diff.

just a thought, then you'd be 100% sure

cheers

Hell, the ratio should be on the vehicle's spec plate. Not sure where it might reside on an MQ, either on the firewall or over the fender inside the engine bay, or maybe on the door jamb. Look for an HG43 or HG46, indicating 4.3x or 4.6x ratio.

In search of an MQ (offset) H233b rear, housing only preferred, plus a complete GQ or GU front (4.6 ratio ideal) to be shipped to the US. Cheap! Email/PM if you can help.

ANSWER;

The diff ratio on the plate said it was a HG43 .

Went to the wreckers ,they had 3 wrecks there and by luck 1 had a limited slip diff in it. All wrecks had HG43 diffs fitted , 2 were turbo 3.3 and 1 non turbo.

thanks John.

I just got an right hand drive 86 MQ/MK parts book...it is fawking huge at like 600 pages or more! It lists all diff ratios up to late 86 and shows changes from 80-86. It also shows a lot of other good info such as factory canvas on SWB.

Any ways...point is I will post the info on diffs as it shows in the Nissan parts book soon.
