5 Link On 80

Post by crankycruiser »

Any Feedback would be good about this subject...

Am seriously thinking of getting one for the 80 as looks like insurance isn't gunna fix it!! (hole nother story)

Anyway where is the best place to inquire about these??

Whats the drivability on road like??

Any draw backs that anyone knows of???

Cheers Ray.

some people recon they are too loose. like driving along with flat tyres and loose wheel nuts.

but depends on how you set it up.

flex awesome. but do you really need that much flex?

is the extra flex worth the extra hassles?

I have to replace my front diff housing, trailing arms and panhard rods anyway after an accident so I figure I might as well have a look at doing it....

I do and its a big jobbie a done mine with all straight control arms and kept a 240mm vertical distance between the upper and lower control arms so the diff dosen't twist too much under braking torque. I put 360' rotators on all my adjustable control arms as it helps to be able to adjust caster to get the handling right. Mine handles real good concidering i have over 12 travel in the front and the cornering just takes some getting used to. :) :)

I would give Cheezy a call. He's nice and close to you and has extensive experience with linked front suspension set ups.

From the website - "We also offer a 5 link front suspension. Our 5 link offer great articulation properties, whilst also ensuring the steering is tight and uncompromising.

Built specifically to suit your requirements. Please call us for specifics on this and to discuss your requirements. Pricing: A-Frame - $2000+ ,
5-Link - $2200+"

what about radius arm flip? i believe overkill make
the plates for about 180 bucks. offers a bit better
flex.

put the front control arm's on top of the diff, allowing
correct castor(no plates or corection bushes, just standard
factory 1's) allow's room for thicker moly steering rod's.
and that's all i know send overkill a pm.

i'd imagine the hardest part would be setting up for
correct castor. cut the old brackets off and throw
in the bin. fit the arms on top with the new plates
bolted on. work out the castor and start welding.
don't quote me. this is just a guess.

thought they were bolt on :?:

As the cruisers do have an extra bolt hole at the top and its just a matter of makin a plate to suit :?:

No idea either.. someone fill us in?

I'd say listen to Mannell, have a think about running the arms on top of the housing this is a good mod on 80s.

dont throw the old mounts in the bin, you reuse them im pretty sure.

wouldnt say flex would change as its the housings resistance to twist that stops the articulation. it just doesnt have anything lower than the housing.

personally id stick with the radius arms. more stable at speeds.

flex is overrated. especially if it causes engineers to kick up a fuss and stuff you around.

The flip plates don't allow more travel as they can't.
They do allow you to get the castor correct without having the tie rod hitting the radius arms and as they make the arms sit alot flatter handles heaps better.

Going to go the flip arms I would say....

Talked to Sam and it sounds a hole lot easier than the five link and I still want it to be driveable on road so it looks like the way to go...

Thanks for all the advice fellas.

Just gotta get the cruizer bac now so I can do it!!
