numerous times when mine was original

mud seems to kill a lot of things

easier to remove it...........clean it up and reinstall it.
main issue seems to be mud and shite coming in contact with the brushes followed by mud and shite in the actual gears which hitting it with a hammer usually loosens (when its in the vehicle and you're having trouble with it).
make sure your wiring is good as well and its well earthed

Mine was failing to throw out (or retract?) once the engine started and making all sorts of noises.

I pulled it out and cleaned it all internally, then lubed everything on the throw out mechanism with silicone spray. There's a one way gear/ clutch that gets full of crud and won't free spin. Liberal quantites of silicone spray while spinning the clutch will clean it out and make it run free again. Has been fine since and that was over a year ago.

A mechanic gave me the tip to use silicone spray as it won't attract dirt like grease will.

Well it's working ok now. it was making noises when first starting before it failed. but now it seems ok and the noises arent there. Might c how it goes and try the silicone thing.

I also had my charge and brakes lights flicker on just before all this happened so I'm hoping it was related and not an alternator hicup.
