You measure - Use string to mark your cut lines then spray over them in paint. Remove string and there is your cut lines.
You cut - Used a Jigsaw so that I would not have to do lots of work later getting a clean join for welding.
You weld - Slow stitch welds so that you dont warp the metal.
You fill - Bog it up to remove the seam and bumps.
You sand - Like a mofo.
You paint - Colour of choice.

Sexy yellow tray!!!! I have a SC and i'm now seriously considering doing the bob! It looks great! How much for a panel beater to do ti - no time these days
Couple of Q's. did you shorten the chassis at all from behind the rear shackle mounts? do you loose one of the mounting points for the tray to chasssis in this process? Is it legal - in QLD if you know but anywhere will do.
Look forward to the feedback - But farq - cool!

No idea how much for a pannel beater, did it myself.
Cut the chassis up to the shackle mounts.
You lose one mounting point, but you lose the tray that its supporting.
I don't live in Qld.
If you can alternate between styleside and dropside trays etc, I dont see why you can not have a custom tray on the back and have it be illegal. Its load space, not passenger space.

Hey Elmo - rang around this arvo and apparently mods to the tray dont concern DOT QLD, If i was to do this mod though i would be shortining the chassis too.
If the chassis is cut back only to the rear brace - again apparently no drama. If the brace is moved to get Shorter chassis it needs to be engineered. (note the use of "apparently")
On Track 4x4 at springwoog will do the mod and cert it for..... wait for it..... $66 an hour, no indicatiuon of how long to do it. they have not done anything like this b4 and are keen to do it however will not give a price at this stage. still looking into it though.
2 questions
1 - are you a panel beater?
2 - if so can i pay you?

Hi Guys i got a quote on this from a backyard panel beater (apparently good quality work though) he said $1100 plus bog and paint.
What do you reckon - is this a good price? I'm goign to get another quote on Fri but reckon this sounds reasonable.
Wait and compare i suppose.

If you think its a good price then it is.
Simple.
I did mine for 1/5 of that.

Well as no one I know actually went and got quotes for it, I have no idea what one would pay. If you are happy with the price given then its a good price for that person. Not for everyone, but its relative.
I could do everything myself not including the welding which is only one part. I used a jigsaw to cut it and a grinder to neaten the join. Anyone can do that. Its just measuring and cutting. I acutally used the guide posted above in the link.
Then you clamp it, and get someone to weld. Then you grind, sand bog, paint. It just takes time doing it yourself.
It was basically my 2nd mod to the truck I ever did after doing a bodylift. I had no mechanical background as such and it came out great. Check the picture above of the little yellow lux bum.

all valid points about what is a reasonable cost and i have now had 2 other quotes one at $1750 and the other around $3K.
i think i will try it myself and get someone with a welder and experience to re join it.
any takersin Bris??

BUMP - Has anyone got any further with this yet? i've been flat out but in the new year will be doing the cut and shut. Are there any other takers out there?
If anyone has done it - are there any pitfalls to watch out for. Going to cut myself and then get it welded and panel beaten. Any ideas on who is cheap or dodgy in Bris?
Keen to hear any feedback whatso ever

same here, have been flat out but will also be picking up my tray in the new year, so ill be even busier as of then
I am going to shorten my tray, im thinking real hard cos once its done its done, certainly looks cool and will give me a better lead out angle, but im just accessing pratical issues.
From what i can gather chopping off the chassis behind the shackle mounts is all good?? no need for engineer?? also i want to weld some bar with a hole in it for a recovery point on each chassis rail, engineer?

Dr4op bear, cool handle so (being the half pi$$ed work party guy I am) I won't pick on you.
Guys, I mean Guz plz uz reel worz so tha rest of uz can work out wat tha hell you are talkin bout. plz
They look cool chopped, you can't actually put 1 T in the back of a DC hilux anyway (they stand up on thier tail). long tray is only for long light loads.
