Sourcing diff centers

Post by PajeroSRV »

Hi all,
wondering if anyone had any ideas on where I can get lower ratio crown wheel an pinion for my NG?

Currently at 4.625 with 33'in tyres so its driving like a dog, not to mention having no engine braking.

I've done a bit of research and found that 4.875 and 5.29 were both made. Are there any places in Melbourne that stock these? I've got the 8'in the front and a 9'in diff in the back.

Would the crownwheel and pinion out of other mitsubishi models, such as the l300 vans etc be compatible?

Any suggestions will be much appreciated.

If you look in the Tech Info post near the top of the forum all the diff ratios for Pajeros are listed.

As a general rule, shortys seem to have the 4.875 and non-turbo diesels the 5.29. Ring around the wreckers...

Cheers,

Yep I'll be running a Mitsu 5.29 in my rear 9" (scored off a mate) and a Toyo HP 5.29 in the front.
You can get a 9" rear 4.875 from a wreckers but they will only sell the centre about $450 roughly. I'd sell you mine but I want to keep it.
The front 8" 4.875 has to be a low pinion (eg - Gen 1 V6) or a 8" 2.6 rear 4.875 which will bolt straight into the front of your Gen 1 V6 diff. Super Select front diffs are high pinion and not compatible with yours unless you do a swap.
The 5.29 is pretty rare now the 9" rear was found in Gen 2 2.5TDI's so you maybe able to find one at a wreckers new from Mitsu they are around $680 (still available in small quantities).
The front is your biggest problem world supplies of 8" low pinion 5.29's are virtually gone but Mitsu maybe persuaded to do a batch. There were 13 left at the Japan central store last year but they have been sold. Me and 2 other guys spent hours tracking part no's of these rare 5.29's. Once we worked out what fits what and announced the part no's the remaining stocks were virtually bought up.
Your best bet is to try and find a Gen 1 2.3TD most of these ran 5.29's the 8" rear will bolt straight into the front of a Gen V6. When I say bolt in I mean the C&P and not the diff centre.
4.875's are reasonably easy to find from wreckers but if you are serious about 5.29's let me know ;)
Good wreckers to try :-

- Mitsi Smart Parts (Ballarat) - 5334 1806 (Jeff) they will deliver as well.
- Imlachs (Clayton) - 9552 1999
I just luv my "clacker Jabber"
