Electronic Ignition Question

Post by ISUZUROVER »

What causes pitting to the rotor and cap terminals in electronic ignition systems. On a std ignition it is a dead condensor but where is is on an electronic system - I didn't think they had a condenser.

I thought condensor faults caused blueing of the points contacts (electrodes) ,as does a faulty coil.
The pitting of the rotor and internal cap contacts happens in any system and happens with current flow and air gaps (arcing).

I thought (and read somewhere) that pitting was caused by spikes in the power that are smoothed out by a properly working condensor.

It could possibly be condensation, but I haven't heard of this as a cause before.

100% correct

The condensor, simply put, stops the spark arc in the points at the times that the points are just about to close or open.

Been thinking about this and if there was condensation in the dizzy then chances are the engine wouldn't run at all
