well if it makes your vehicle safer in a roll over accident, and is done properly - then I dont see why there should be any engieering certs, or full cages 'not allowed'..
obviously there needs to be room to get out of your vehicle in a fire or something, and enough room so your head doesn't smack into a bar (if you have an accident).

I just got back from the engineers this morning, of all the things done to the surf i got knocked back on two things..... Rear flares need to be slightly wider and rear seats need to be taken out. He said with the rollcage crosing over the rear seats in a /\ towards the outsides of the rear part of the wagon, the car has to be a two seater, i don't know why.... i've got padding everywhere and the bars arn't that close to the passengers heads.... but hey, who am i to argue . So i'll take them out and maybe they'll just happen to go back in there at some stage :wink:

The report will say something like "the seating capacity has been reduced to two (2) persons following removal of the rear seat and seat belts".
If you then get pulled up with the rear seat back in, you will get hammered :(
once you have bars encroaching in to rear passenger space, it'll have to be registered as a 2 seater. if you're busted with more seats than what you're supposed to have, then you'll be dixed. if the bars only go down the middle section, see if he'll pass it as a 4 seater.
i spent last night reading up on all the rules there. flares have pretty stringent rulings.

i guess they deem it affects the visibility and thus safety of other road users.
i know when i rode my motorbike, i was glad certain cars didn't spray much water. but some were real shockers and you'll be blinded.
funny how they talk about "air/water separator device" and they're just referring to bristles around the rim of the flares on trucks. haha!

Jeremy, you didn't happen to ask how you could get the cage engineered and still be a 4 seater, maybe a rectangle from the drivers over the passengers and then have the down tubes.

Nam, I was spewin about the seats, should have looked into it a bit more, it's a long drive from pennant hills to minto ...... But i'm not too fazed about it being a two seater, just means i can build a decent set of draws/bed setup in there now !! But it would have been surprising if he had of faulted the suspension, it's driving like an absolute dream, sam got me in some dobbinsons 4" lift heavy duty 80 springs, and they're perfect, being stiffer in the back has made the front behave much nicer too, i took it up to 110 easily today and she tracks perfectly. The 5.71's make a huge difference as well, can't wait to get it in the rocks !!! Very happy

Went a saw a mate that builds drag cars for a living and he lent me this little circular guide. It gets placed in the drivers seat and indicates where the cage can and can't be. Main hoop must be 873 mm from a hole in the circle (but not in the middle of the circle???)
Full cages are "not actively encouraged" but they treat each vehicle on it;s merits. Being a soft top works in your favour as far as a full cage is concerned.
