Rear drive shaft question

Post by bubs »

In my project I need to run a two piece rear drive shaft.

I have a couple of questions

1. To any vehicles use a two piece rear shaft with a double cardin joint in them?

2. Can i put a double cardin on a centre bearing setup

3. Which centre bearing to use, i thought i read somewhere a F100 is a good centre bearing?

I need to do this to clear my link cross member and be able to point the pinon up so i have mega clearnce

Can you tell i have had nothing to do with 2 piece tail shafts

1. Sorry don't know.
2. Should be allright as long as you align the shafts and joints properly to prevent vibration.

For example, if the drive shaft from the transfer case remains inline with the t/case output shaft (to get past the link cross member), then you can treat the double cardin joint at the centre, just the same as if it was at the t/c output shaft, i.e. point the diff pinion straight at the double cardin joint.

In this example there would be no noticable angle in the joints at the t/case or the diff pinion.

Then the t/case output shaft and 1st drive shaft are allways in phase.

The double cardin joint ensures that the 1st drive shaft is in phase with the 2nd drive shaft.

And the 2nd drive shaft is in phase with the diff pinion.

3. Don't know. I would use a Y-bearing unit - most bearing suppliers have these in pillow block or flanged housings.

The pic shows an NTN 211-200 unit (without a housing) that I had in the shed.
