MTQ (DTS) GU turbo upgrade info

Post by sootygu »

Has anyone had the updrade for a GU TD6. I have enquired from a few companys who fit these and all seem to give different percentage increases and would like to know what is realistic. Does the low down torque and engine response improve below 1500 rpm and is it worth the money.

only met one guy who had this done

he had a TD6 non intercooled and was pulling a massive caravan i think 36 foot it was the larges offroad trailer he was going around australia.

And yes said he needed it cause it assisted him towing.

Dont forgot the DTS package also up the boost and fuel and put a 3" exhaust i reckon you should do that first then if you want do the DTS package but saying that there are plenty of other packages out there.

Depends if you need to tow so much

DTS make a turbo dump elbow which replaces the original which is only about 1.5" to 2" in diameter, causing a very large restriction in the exhaust.
Fitting a new 3" exhaust is no good without fitting this elbow from DTS as well. I have it on mine and my brothers GU, and the difference with the elbow alone is huge.
Chop it drop it and big block it.

I have contacted DTS and they have no stock of the dump pipe at the moment, due in 2-3 weeks. If this and a tune up gives me enough of an increase I cant see a reason to spend the extra on the turbo upgrade. I am still curious to hear from someone who has the upgrade.

i have a 03 4.2 turbo intercooled ute,got the turbo mod done includeing the 3" exhaust. bumped up the boost (9psi now) on the dyno its running 121KW at the wheels and 405 nm @4000rpm it is a hell of a diffrence to drive. going through a bit more fuel but that doesn't bother me,the turbo whistle is very loud @ about 1300rpm(very loud but sounds awesome ) would highly recomend it. hope this helps..

do they just modify the exhaust to get 405nm or is a intercooler added aswell

usually the complete upgrade is the full exaust recalibrate injectors play with boost and the fuel pump a good tuner will give a before and after dyno reading

Guys, has anyone any knowledge of the 3" exhaust that begins at the turbo body rather than have a dump pipe mentioned earlier?

It strikes me that if you can do it then it would be cheaper unless it is just a casting that can stand the temperatures. Beaudeset Exhausts were quoting that way but their ehaust was close to $900 from memory. It may be cheaper to do the dump pipe & standard 3" mandrel bent route.

The dump pipe is the section that comes of the turbo body and has to be replaced to increase the flow rate. There is no point using a 3inch exaust unless this replaced. Beaudeset manufacture their dump from pipe and not a casting, which they claim is as strong and have had no returns to date.

DTS dump pipe (casting) $220
Beaudeset dump pipe (tube) $185

For the price difference I would stick to the cast unit.

SootyGU I understood the Beaudesert Exhausts system exhaust has an integral dump pipe, in other words the dump pipe is part of their exhaust - right from the casting of the turbo.

I want to head down the manderel bent path myself soon. Who supplies the least expensive solution?
