reduction gears

Post by madrangie »

I am running 35's and find the gearing in low range is to high, Looked at a maxi drive 40% reduction for low range ( lt230 transfer case) has anyone used these before are they worth the money ? Or is a crown and pinion a better way to go . I find high range is ok pushs the tires no prob.

Gearing

Post by HSV Rangie »

if you change the diff ratio it increse engine revs at cruising speed.
your optios are to:
1: Maxi l/range gearing.
2: Change diff ratio and put up with excessive revs at road speeds.
3: Change T/case and diff ratio there by getting a good combination of both.

If the spread sheet below works may show some options

If you got the $$$ then the maxi gears is the way to go. i wouldnt change to rover 4.7 diff gears cause these are very weak.

I've got the 30% maxidrive crawler, and I'm impressed. Rockcrawling is much easier, more controlled.

But not only the performance, the quality seems better. No backlash, but they do howl. (I assume they're straight cut?)

Looked at putting 4.1 diffs in, but the maxidrive was cheaper.
And Hi range is unaffected.

Haven't tried to double shuffle from low to hi on the move yet, there may not be enough overlap now.

I'm running hypoid in the rear 4.7's and Rover frontbut am changing to 4.1 shortly. Rest is Chev Turbo 4000 Lt230, Low range is too low at moment. Need to accelerate down rock faces etc. Would keep stock T/C ratios for Victoria and change diffs. Also your 5 speed has a high first gear when compared to most others. Go the diffs for better high range performance also.

Can take off beeter in 1st Gear High Range and lower the speed that the Rangie does at any given RPM. Probably capable of 190 kays plus at the moment and you are are braver then me if you want to drive your truck at that speed. I have seen it, no disrespect, wouldn't want to do that on my swampers either.

i like the fact that it only does 2000 rpm at 100kph mind you it can get away from you .Coming home this morning down the hume hwy speed crept up to a 128 at one stage . before i got the motor rebiult and injected it i was clocked at a 147 kph the 35 handle it ok wouldn't want to cruise at that speed thou . I also have the rev limiter set at 3g as we found there is no need to rev it higher does nothing except make shit loads more noise .
To change diff ratio's how much will that cost rounghly and will it be weaker then what i already have , will i have to mod the maxi's lockers aswell ?

4.1's from Maxi Drive will bolt straight in and is a reverse cut for the front, most of the competition Rangies are now running these.

Change your gearbox

Post by hoops »

I am just about to put a GQ gearbox into mine. It has a really low 1st gear which when you do the sums the final drive is lower than if i put a maxidrive crawler xfer box in and ran std gearbox. Probably not cost effective when compared to other options, but my original gearbox is on its way out. Plus the GQ box can take the power of whatever motor i finally decide to put in it.
