inter state dot rules

Post by damo lux »

If you buy a vehicle from say nsw and want to take it to qld, and the vehicle has mods that are engineered in nsw, does the vehilce have to be re engineered and have a new mod plate or would the nsw one be suffice? :?:

just keep the rego in the state of origin..... much easier and in the case of NSW to QLD, NSW would have more relaxed Compliance laws etc then QLD would, i think...........

Check but thats what i'm led to believe :D

So if i get the job i applied for in qld. It would be best to leave my rego at my parents address in sydney. Do i have no chance geeting my soa patrol passed for engineering up there?

If your car is registered and engineered in NSW then they cannot defect you if you are in QLD.

Yes but there are plenty of ways around that is you want to keep it registered in NSW. You can claim you have 2 places of residence, or you change the truck into your parents name if they still live in NSW.

In victoria it's 7 days to change your drivers licence and registration... not that it's really enforced but it's still scary.

Anyway we're talking NSW to QLD.

If you do get grabbed by the cops a couple of times and it's still registered in NSW they will ask questions unless you're living down the gold coast where it's the other side of town and it gets ignored. Remeber each time you get pulled over will go on record.

Normally you'd get away with driving on interstate rego for ages but SPOA cars stand out here a mile, especially if they have a few other bits of lift.

And if it's SPOA and visibly high you will get regular visits to the QLD blue light disco guaranteed if it's a daily driver.

In addition even if it's still engineered and registered in NSW when you get pulled, it better be EXACTLY in the spec it was engineered in or they can still get it put off the road. Ask Roc70Y....

And they can do it immediately if they want to be pricks since it's obviously unsafe to drive it all the way back down to sydney to be checked.

Remember that your engineers cert from NSW means absolutely squat when it's time to get it registered and engineered up here. That means all our fun rules about tyre size and body lift will affect you too.

However on the upside it's far easier to get an interstate registered vehicle registered here than you think - it only needs a safety certificate and a visit to your local DOT office. No need for full inspections unless engine number and chassis number do not match up, or there's a flag on your car for beings stolen or a repaired writeoff or something.

Mate of mine (actually on this board), his dad is a QLD DOT inspector, and he tells me if its engineered in NSW, and you bring it to QLD with SPOA, then you will get away with it.

It's the only way you can legally have SPOA in QLD apparantly.

He is pretty anal about these sorta details, so I would take his word for it. That said, wouldn't hurt to ring DOT and see what they say. I bet if you rang 3 times you will get 3 different storys :)

I got the same thing from QLD DOT a while back. they said if it was eng. and reg. in Vic or NSW for 2 years or more I could legaly have it reg in qld with a SPOA. I asked this because I am moveing to VIC for 2 years at the end of this year and my evil plan was to SPOA it in vic. drive it for 2 years then move back up here and transfer the rego over. but as said above I wouldn't be at all surprised if I was to ring DOT today and get a whole new story. because if you read the qld rules they contridct them selvs by saying that a SPOA is prohibited. but mods aproved in other aus states will be aproved if the vehicle was reg in the previous state for at least 2 years.

What about for people who go interstate for work every couple of years like those in the armed forces?
Surely there must be exemptions other than taking out your 3'' body lift 35'' meats and SOA?????/

SPOA = Spring over axle, you take the leaf spring which is under neath the axle (think of a zook) and mount it on top of the axle (think of a lux)

The only exemption for the ADF is the rego transfer time limit. Normally you have up to 3 months ( i think ) once you move interstate but if you are a defence member you can wait for your rego to come up for renewal before you transfer it.

Everything else is as per normal, mores the pity :? :?

I've got a few mates in the Armed forces, and according to them you don't have to transfer your rego at all, apparantly there is a concession in place for them. I know this is true for their license, but I'm not sure about the vehicle rego!

An example, a mate of mine in the army had his car registered in Qld, his license in Tas, and was posted in NSW! A headache for the cops when he gets pulled up (imported r32 skyline!)

Cheers,
Dean

I have heard that but I haven't seen anything in writing so I would say thats a myth ADF come under the same rules as everyone else.

EDIT: the rules for licences are also the same. but If you do keep your rego in another state no one (in the ADF)will normally say anything ;)
