so being as handy with the tools as you seem to be have you made external ones or not?
if so did you ever drive these on the road?I'm looking at making some external ones after what i've read about the internals.
Have you got any tips that you would like to pass on. they are are going on 15x8 steelies with 36" simex's.

I looked into this 6 months ago...... Thought being removing the Simex tubes and replacing them with beadlocks.
The local "Speedway Shop" sells kits for DIY beadlocks and from memory they went for around.....
Steel inner, Steel outer setup = $ 80.00 a rim
Steel inner, Alloy outer setup = $120.00 a rim
The Alloy set was predrilled but didnt come with nuts n bolts.
The steel set wasnt drilled and again no nuts n bolts.
I've done 2 sets of rims ( one of each type) now and cant find any major differances between the steel or alloy setup. I also used a mig on the first set and went to arc on the second set ( ran out of argon on the mig), and I must admit that the arc welding was a much better job both in looks and strength in the final product even though it took an extra hour or so compared to the miged set to actually weld up.
A simple way to "true up " the rim was to .....
tack the beadlock on to the rim,
fit the rim onto the jacked up rig,
spin it slowly and using a brick sitting on the floor as a "guide for trueing",
add a few extra tacks as I went.
once I was happy with the alignment I welded 2" then spun the rim a 1/4 of a turn then welded a further 2".... and so on.
The rims came up really well and I even took em down to the local tyre joint and had him spin em on the tyre balancer ( minus tyres ) so I could see how far out of wack they were...... must have fluked both sets as neither had any distortion or out of balance effect.!

Both guys are ex speedway drivers and now work as "spare parts suppliers" only for speedway cars and predominately for sprintcars.
If they dont have any stock on hand then its usually a 2 week wait for new stock........ its also nearing the end of the sprincar season so they may have "reduced" their stock on hand.
