Patrol Not Idling
As the subject says, on Sunday I finally got off my butt and adjusted the tappets on my Patrol (L28 Petrol), all was sweet after i did it (still slightly noisy but heaps better than before i started) but now it wont idle. It used to idle at about 800-900rpm (just a bit high, i know) but now it will sit at about 500rpm for about 30 seconds than just die. After that happens it is a bit of a pig to start, only cranking over slowly like the battery is flat, until i give the gas primer a squirt.
Any help greatly appreciated as it has me stuffed...

Okay Dave,
Couple of solution present themselves here.
1. Did you readjust mixtures/timing once tappets adjusted?
2. Were the tappets overtightened? if so - motor life expectancy just got cut by 3/4....
3. Did you set to factory spec's with feeler gauges? try to allow some slop for age/flogged factor. (i've been with you when you have driven...!)
4. Check your points gap as well - so set the timing, adjust mixture, check points gap and up the idle.
Its been a while since i played with a petrol motor but that is the best way to be sure of what you have done is correct.
good luck and don't blow your motor b4 Sunday! Or do the Chev Conversion NOW!!!!

Paul,
1. No I didn't adjust the timing/mixture, I have NFI how to
2. & 3. Yes I used feeler gauges, and used the factory specs (Thanks Besty ). I don't think I over tightened them cos they still make a bit of noise, but I might pull the rocker cover off and check them again.
4. No points to adjust, Electronic ignition on mine now.
Spose i'll have to do a bit more work on it...oh well.
Thanks

I have a timing light - so you will need to re-adjust - then this will help.
Fuel mixture sounds wrong - I agree with 2car.
PM with you address - I might be able to drop off the timing light some time b4 friday bro!

Thanks for the offer Paul, PM sent.
Thanks for the input 2car.
The car is doing this on Gas, haven't tried petrol yet, am I right in thinking the idle mixture won't affect the gas?

ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
on gas eh?? Mixture setting for gas is at the convertor.
Yip around to PRogas near your work bloke - tell him Rangie Ben sent you and get it tuned bro. Tuning it for petrol is pointless if you run gas 80% of the time.... Might be as simple as opening the gas mixture up and playing with ignition timing.... Also check to see if you have any loose lines that you may have dislodged during the process.
