Troopy wont start
I have a hj47 and it wont start, the battery is full and the glow plugs click as normal, but when you turn the key further to kick it up it just clicks..... now the single click doesent come from the starter motor, it comes from behind the glove box area... is it the alt regulator thats stuffed? any one got a clue? cos i havnt.... thanks.
Just today my HJ45 wouldn't start, then it took up smoking! It was from around the glove box area aswell. The starter motor was actually clicking, but there was nothing convincing about it. After much rooting around I found a combined Glow plug and Starter relay hidden in there with the wiring to it looking rather cooked. I so far have unwrapped the loom a bit and seperated the wires going to it and it is working again, there is definately something more sinister going on though. As soon as I get my hands on a wiring diagram, I'll be able to figure that out, the question is do the 47's run a similar setup and could it be the same problem? P.M. me if you want to chat or have some diagrams!!

The plot thickens... i got up this morning and it started first pop... twice!.. now it wont start again same as before. now if it is the starter why start twice then not work anymore? oil level is good.. pressure when it did start was good.. Battery is full... i can easily hear the glow plugs switch on/off.. i get a loud ping from the glove box area when i flick the key all the way and ive traced that noise to the alt/reg on the fire wall in engine bay ive got the old man coming over in the morning see if we cant suss the prob.... let yas know how it works out. thanks for help everyone
long shot...
with the old girl in gear, just rock it back and forth and give it another go, when my starter was dying years ago, this would get it going every time, apparently it just helped to make contact somewhere in the starter, coz once it started turning it was fine!!!
like I said, long shot

The system is very very similar across the 40/60/70 series vehicles.
Get a manual.....
Mines coming in on Tuesday or Wednesday! What do you mean by "work on"?

The relays run the starting sequence. Glow, power to starter, check water temp, chcek oil temp , overinject, glow off, over inject off etc ( & not all in that order). It will be the relays that are the problem. IF you don't have a manual check out/search the arkive of the Diesel Toyota Land Cruisers (DTLC) list. This problem is common as........

Yep thii happens when the starter is "polling in the field" IE: When the coil that makes the starter rotate when excited by current isn't lined up with the magents that provide he other magnetic field spin. Caused by worn bushed on the main shaft.
Ok first of all i think its something in the starter relay.. from what you say major60 this sounds about right.... i am going to borrow/beg/steal a workshop manual tomorrow. im confused as to where this starter relay is cos my 47 dont have a kick pannel.... AAAAAARRRRRGGGHHHH! i just went out and the mongrel started.. warmed it up... shut it down.. tryed to start it and..............CLICK! but one thing i did notice is that all the dash lights fade away when i tryed to kick it up the second time..... OH WHAT A FEELING..

Just wondering if you read the contribution I made about a similar problem I had on the same day you first posted? With mine the imeadiate problem was the wiring to the relay melting down, unwrapping the loom and splitting the wires up has solved it short term. When I get a diagram through the week, I will have a better chance of finding what is drawing so much current that the wiring started to melt in the first place. The Major says they are all pretty similar so you might want to check your loom!! P.S. you have found your glow plug and starter relays or relay, haven't you?

A bit of time and a clear head and you will work it out I am sure. When you do celebrate with these.

That's seriously different! Yet some how very funny, I wonder if they are marketed by a Welsh Rugby fan?

The starter relay on a 47 is behind the black duct on the firewall l/h footwell.
Black HJ The starter relay is there to power the solenoid in the starter motor the reason you burnt the wire is because of to much current got hot melt wire
If the starter relay was dead do you think it would still work after being fried.
There is also contacts in the ignition switch.
Try bypassing wiring to starter next time it doesn't work
Clicking from starter is the contacts.
Contacts in the starter soleniod will be worn and are available from most auto electrical suppliers.
The old 47 will be starting to wear electrical things out fairly regulary.
Have you been through water recently.

Spit my last breath
Well i went over the whole shebang with a multi-meter and an exelent workshop manual (Hint.. havent got a workshop manual for your fourby and dont have much cash... go to your local library they have heaps and its FREE to borow.. ) everything checked out nicely no probs.. went to kick her up and click nothing.. so i pulled the lead to the starter off and it looked like shit, so i wire brushed it stuck it back on and YYYEEEAAAHHH! she has kicked up just fine ever since... cost... $0 YA GOTTA LOVE A 40 EH! just keep the contacts clean..
