Hi,

here is mine:1988 3.5 efi auto, portal axles from Volvo C303 (1:5.99 total axle gearing), Q78-16 TSL's, Warn HS9500 and homemade bumpers front & rear, simple roll cage but requires back seat to be taken out.

Quite recent pic, winch & bull bar removed, I broke the winch a month ago in an orienteering competition, warn had no brake and many of the control points were in steep hills and the ~zero-temp snow was awfully slippery, very little or no grip even in level places. The lamps (12*55W) in the roof are very good when driving without daylight.

Image

One from last summer, yet another drum brake cleaning session about to begin...

Image

Task list: disc brakes, more power to the steering, extra alternator and some body rust repairs, but otherwise it's very much OK.

Wish list: engine rebuild and boggers, but these are not going to happen anytime soon.

A lot of action pics in http://www.offroadoulu.com/oro/galleria.htm

Some longer videos also here: http://stiletti.wipsl.com/videot/OffRoadOulu/

To answer a few questions about my suspension.

The rear is basically a Scorpion Extreme kit but with shocks I had custom made by Oram.

The front uses Scorpion rear dislocation cones, turrets that we fabricated specifically, dual rate springs and the same shocks as the rear, all eye to eye.

The passenger side radius arm is hinged. I had one I bought from Europe but this one is a replacement we designed and made. We analysed and modeled the standard arm and then designed a replacement that is at least as strong. It is machined from EN 24. Balanced flex and the handling seems fine.

Hinged both sides?

Do you have problems with it suddenly unloading?

i've watched swaggi a few times doing its best to roll over(granted sometimes it does  ) and it seems balanced or at least predictable on off camber ledges. maybe under power or inertia situations where there is more momentum the hinged side may unload awkwardly or unpredictably(sp?)

This is my wifes car. It still has not clocked up 9000km. It has just returning from the Panel Shop after I did a little bit ($14,000) worth of damage on 1 trip last year.
I have been banned from Tuff trips so the Disco is relegated to outback touring and I am looking for an old Rangie. I have already bought a set of diffs, dic to disc with Maxidrive axels & lockers for a Rangir. Now I just need to find a car.

It is just the passenger side.

I have seen comments about adverse handling but I can't say I have noticed any problems. And any downside is balanced against a well balanced vehicle, with wheels on the ground and controlled body movement. Oh, and it drives "normally" on the road.

I bought mine as a '94 300tdi D90 CSW

Since then I've done a few things things ;)

Highlights (in no particular order) include:

- HS 2.8l TGV
- ARB airlockers
- Maxi Drive shafts
- moddified M8274-50 front winch on an ARB bumper
- rear mounted Superwinch Husky
- 35x10.5 Simex ETs off road
- Safety Devices full external cage
- OME 2" lift
etc

Image

Image

Plans for the near future:

- low ratio transfer box
- lots more work to both winches
- Auto box conversion (my R380 won't like 360+ lb/ft of torque)
- tune the engine 'a little'
- totally change all the suspension
- do something to stop constantly breaking CVs

Tim, I like where you've mounted your front shocks. Have you had any problem making the turrets strong enough?

Paavo,

I've been looking at this also, and I would like to know what you are going to do for disc brakes on the volvo portals.

There is an American company, Off Road General Store who run Team Purple and they produce a disc conversion for the Volvo that looks pretty sweet.

Will

They seem strong enough so far!! :)

But you never know!!!! The welds are actually really long (and properly done) and there is no sign of flex or paint cracking.

Tim,

I found Off Road General Store some time ago, before I had Volvos. But they and the other sites like extreme axle, which had tech about volvos have dissapeared. I guess none are doing anything with volvos over in USA anymore.

The problem with xtermeaxle disc brakes is that those require 17" rims, wich was not a good option for me, since I had and still have have 3 sets of std volvo 16" rims + 1 set of (new) tyres, and even worse the availability of 17" rims and tyres is not perfect (at least in finland).

One finnish guy is making a homemade disc brake conversion, using toy discs and calipers, 15" rims are OK, and spare part availability is good. Then I need to change to 6-lug rims, and dump the 8-lug volvo rims. This project is not ready yet, I think only 1 axle is done so far, several cars in the queue... including mine, drom brakes just suck (in my usage, a lot of mud typically, the drums are really awful when wet and/or dirty).

Those who know finnish can follow this forum ("finnish pirates"):
