WE Rock - Round 1 - Rover Park 12/13 March

Oh yeah my highlite of the weekend was my Mum giving the Yobos a mouth full on Sat and then going and sitting next to them all Sunday to keep them in line. All you guys that think the Yobo crew shouldnt be there are way out of line. I actually enjoy competing when the hecklers are realy getting into you.

I just thought Id post up a few on my thoughts on how the competition went.
On a whole I thought the competition went fairly smoothly. The recovery times wernt to bad but when only one course is run at a time then any stoppage in the action is bad for spectators. In all the future competitions we will definately be running more that one obstacle at a time. I almost think that we will step straight up to running the 5 obstacles all at the same time so that we can keep the competition flow happening and minimise downtime due to recovery. This basically means that on a really difficult obstacle with difficult recoveries that obstacle could take the whole day to run the rigs through and not effect the timing of the event.
Crowd safety was a very big concern for me. With the courses on the side of a hill meant that the crown could get below and to the sides of the competiting rigs meant that any rocks (and tree) moved by the rigs could easily get into the crowd. With how we did this event last year in a gully was much better in terms of crowd safety cause the crowd was on the opposite bank to the rigs. In the US most of their competitions are on the side of hills with the crowd below the vehicles so it must be an issue for them also. Probably just a matter of putting the crowd further away.
The course design is probably the hardest part of the competition. Trying to make courses that are drivable, entertaining and still seperates the good rigs from the bad ones without hurting anybody. I think for my first real effort of course design on terrain that hasnt been driven (only one gate had been driven previously in the lockless) it didnt come off too bad. For the most part the courses worked how I had imagined - some obstacles were alot harder than I thought and a few were alot easier. But for the most part we got a good variation of different rigs making different obstacles look easy. I think the biggest issue for me is that I really want to be able to compete at these competitions next year and for this to happen we need to find sombody that can do the course designs - this is probably the most critical part of putting these competitions together. Anybody keen to have a go at this (PM me). You need to have a flexable job to allows time off, a fair idea of what these rigs are capable of and a real thinking brain that can work out how shifting a cone a foot each way can make a huge difference on how the course works. If I could run these courses again there would be a few cones I would move by a foot to make some of the gates easier/harder. I think if somebody is really keen and has the ability to do the job I would build them a buggy so they would be able to test some of the lines - given that you probably need a tow rig also although I could supply one of these as well. You dont necessarily have to drive all the gates but its good to get a feel on how the terrain works and how the traction and steepness effect things. For example if you know that you can easily drive up a smooth rock face or ledge then you can place the course on a section of that same face or ledge on a section that is a bit harder.
I really do think that the format and rules work very very well and can see that as we go along we are going to produce some really entertaining driving that spectators are going to love. I believe that there isnt a competition format that will come close to what this format has to offer. Basically a simple combination of lots of very short courses, high winching penalities and moderate DNF scores will produce really aggressive and exciting driving. This is good for spectators and good for sponsors which means that hopefully we should be able to generate some money off of this to really get amongst it and promote this sport. Once we get it to the level where it can generate a bit on income then we can start to pay people for the work that they do and everything will be alot easier and more professional.
In terms of more competitors I think that these will come. I know of alot of people that are buiding buggies or are going to build buggies so hopefully some of these rigs will happen and get to the competitions. One thing that is becoming more important very quickly is how good the rigs look. If you want to get coverage in the mags or in the videos then if you have a really good looking rig thats painted in bright colours (ie not black or dark blue for example) then you will have a lot better chance of getting your rig out there. The better our rigs look then the better this sport will look to prospective sponsors and the better for everyone.
So, looking forward to Round 2. Should be in NSW close to Sydney and date and venue should be announced next week.

having worked with mags, I must agree, the louder the paint jobs/presentation the more appealing these vehicles are on the cover of magazines.
the winch challenge guys do a relatively good job of this, and although you might prefer to keep a low profile with your rattle can black rig, its not that desirable to the camera.
pics turn out dull and just dont jump off the page,
sponsors will appreciate the rolling bill board as well,

If only i lived in Qld or NSW it seems now. Would be very keen to get involved inthe course design side but no chance at the moment being in Vic with no chance of job flexibility

more than one stage at a time might make it hard to follow your two or three favorite teams at once.
perhaps once the first buggy completes the first stage he lines up on the second stage and stays ready to go incase a recovery is needed ... you then switch your attention to the second stage and start running that while the recovery happens.

Two favourite buggies were Humprey's and the Minime rover buggy (What a team!!!!)
Favourite overall was the buggy killer!!!! Love the rolling up in the daily driver and converting it into a comp truck....
Walking the course, I thought most of it was undrivable hehehe

IMO, If a rock knocks over a cone thrown by vehicle or spotter, no penalty.
IMO, One driver, One spotter, hard to police but what can you do. Maybe warn spectators that "give it some" or "drive it" is ok but "Hard right, second gear, spotter pull down on left" is pushing it. Like I said, hard to police....

Amazing to hear that Cheezy got a drive as well.
You guys have gone above and beyond to promote WErock and get things off the ground.
I have a suggestion for interstate teams to be able to compete.
It would be very cool if you guys had a buggy interstate guys could hire and have a go at the event in.
The same way Cheezy and Guts flew up there and got to drive.
Shane and I would be keen to do this as well.
And I am sure there are plenty of other teams out there that would be interested.
It adds a wildcard entrant to the comp and means you get to see an invitational team every time it is held.
Perhaps there could be one wildcard team at each event from a different state to the one the event is being held in.
Not sure how the finances would work, but it could work on the basis that if you break the buggy you pay for the repairs.
The event sponsors might be able to help the visiting team pay for airfares.
I am sure people always have a spare bed, and transport to the event is not hard.
Or worst case scenario the visiting team has to pay all costs. But that would still work.
Not sure if it is a realistic idea, but after hearing Cheezy raving about it for hours on end it sounds like it would be an awesome concept until things really get off the ground.
And when Cheezy gets his Victorian events off the ground the same could apply.
