How do you remove wheel bearing and retainer from rear axle shaft?
Any help much appriciated.

You take it to a mechanic and say "can you take these off this please and I`ll call back in this arvo"

Well thats how I do them, but I`m lazy :D

Even then I belive that half the time they just oxy them off anyway.

I couldn't tell ya how to do it otherwise cause I throw them at a mechanic too...

Mine will try the press 1st, some times it works, sometimes they need a bit of heat, most times I think they need cutting off. Shits of things and that is why I just don`t bother

I've never done it but I believe you carefully grind the collar then split it with a cold chisel.Not sure on the bearing but they should come off easily with the right bearing remover.The type that has two plates that are dished and with bolts through the sides.Hope that makes sense.

i used mash hammer, big stone chisel on one side, then did the other side about 6 mths later and just used little grinder with cutting wheel in it and split it, lots easier

I just got a couple of bits of HEAVY angle iron I found laying around my old mans shed and drilled it to suit the bolt patern of the flanges and chucked it in his home made press and pressed the suckers straight off.

easy to take it to a mech as guts said due to either way he gets off press or oxy u r meant to use the oxy to heat up the new lock collar to a certain amount throw it on the axle and knock it home with a decent piece of tube ,longer than the axle preferably thats just the way ive seen it done may o time

I got a tool we use at work for hilux/hiace bearings.

Oh, and no you cant borrow it. :D


I would take it to a mechanic, less brain damage that way.

Carefull not to nick the axle with the grinder otherwise you might have to get another axle in the near future. ;)

I grind a flat spot onto the retainer, then cut a grove into it .. couple of thumps with a lump hammer and big chisel .. it normally cracks pretty easy .. only takes about 10 to 15 mins ..

If you have it and a steady hand the dremel with small cuttoff wheel goes through em like butter, as the cut is only about 1mm wide .. produces a great stress concerntrator to crack it with the hammer/chisel ..

I just use slight heat from oxy to heat the ring up (doesn't matter bout the bearing stuffed anyway) :) :) :)

Heat it up upside down till it falls off easy done

Then do it in reverse heat ring till it just red and then place on the axle and it will fall on give light tap while still warm put on c-clip and all good
