Add turbo to my 2L or buy a used 2LT

My present 2L engine has done 550k and is a bit sluggish. I am now considering whether to rebuild my 2L and add a turbo and intercooler or just buy a used 2LT and be done with it. I heard fitting a turbo to my 2L is not really feesible as the 2L will die rather quickly. Fitting another type of engine is not possible.

What do you guys think.

Well OK, but my 2L is actually ok and I dont mind to rebuild it despite its km.

My question is it practicle to fit a turbo onto it or should I just go for a 2LT whose km will be relatively unknown. When I mean practicle will I damage the engine in the long run? Meaning compression ratio's etc.

I believe the 2LT has a stronger bottom end that makes it more suitable for forced induction.

Hopefully someone else can chime in with details.

V8 is a good idea. However my road tax will ber sky high in the country I am. Thats why have to stay with a 2.5litre.

the bottom end in the 2L-T is stronger (same as a 3L) and much better for taking the boost, the turbo pistons are also heavier and have thicker crowns and skirts to deal with the extra heat. turboing and rebuilding the 2L will cost a LOT more than getting a decent, low mileage 2L-T import.

Hi dumbdunce,

I am working in Malaysia. I have to stick with a 2.5 cos if I go any higher the road tax will drastically increase.

Alot of 2LT here, but most of them from taxi's.

neither, go a 3L & enjoy the benfits!

A 3L will outlast a turbo 2.4 (2l or 2L-T) by a country mile as well as handle a turbo with no probs!

I'd have a NA 3L (2.8Litre) over a turbo 2L-T any day!

the 2L & 2LT have a pretty weak head as compared to a 3L.

did you read the thread? there are good reasons why he has to stick with sub 2.5 litre. the late 2L-T (1990-) has a near identical head to the 3L, but agreed the earlier 2L-T heads have problems with cracking, breaking valves and dropping valve seats and precombustion chamber fragments.

Does anyone know where I can find the engine numbers for the 2LT series engine? I don't wish to end up one of those older engines.
