2003 IFX Hilux and 33 BFG MTs

Post by V6XtraHilux »

Hey all,

Just a quick one, hoavent had much luck with specific info and SEARCH.

Ive got a 2003 IFS Hilux, V6, with a 50mm bodylift, and just fitted 33 BFG muddies. Generally speaking, ive had no problems, but on mid lock, and say turning from a road into a driveway, as the wheel goes up, the back of the tyre hits the back (closest to door) guard. At the moment its purely damaging the plastic guard cover, but I havent had it off road yet.

Is there a way of limiting ther upward travel of the IFS so it doesnt foul the guard/tyre? Perhaps winding the torsion bar to its upper limit??

MB increase upper bumpstop length?

I dont really want to get to it with a hammer or tin snips, so please dont offer that as an option. Non destructive opinions would be preferable.

Thanks.

Mate I modified my bumpstops but made them smaller, I am sure you could find bigger one or just put some spacers behimd your current ones

yeah, modifying the bumpstops was one idea, but will it limit the upward motion of the wheel?

will have a propoer look this week, gotta sort it out this weekend before the following weekend's 4wd action, so i dont come back with damaged guards!!

Thanks Heath

V6Xtra,
Are the bfg's 12.5's? Next question, hows the 3.4 turn them, does it labour at 100 or is it ok? also Im assuming you wound up the tbars a bit, hows the ride? ive heard that it can get a bit rough.

Cheers

Justin,
The ride is great with torsion bars wound up, not all the way up, but will most like have to do that on the weekend to try to stop my problem. Potholes arent the best at any time, but with the bars wound up, they are bigger than the grand canyon, bumpstops are a slight saviour!!

Tyres are 33x10.5x15 not 12.5 widths, and the 3.4 V6 has absolutely no problem turning the wheels, I actually believe the car runs better on the bigger tyres. At 100, theres still heaps of pedal to go a bit more, but my speedo is out due to the tyre dia, so at 90 indicated, its still got power to spare, and 100 indicated, its still got more coming along.

Cheers

Mate i know that winding the tosion bars up doesnt let the wheel drop as much and it will raise the car up and give a bit more clearance, Whehter or not it will stop the rubbing I am unsure

winding the torsion bars up won't stop the rubbing at full compression. When I had my 99 lux with heavy duty torsion bars I still scrubbed at mid lock and full compression with 33x10.5. Honestly the only way to stop it was to remove the mud flaps, cut the inner guard and trim the inside of the flares. Winding up also means you end up with next to no droop. Next to none of nearly none to start with means you have bugger all.

thanks guys, I'll take all that on board when I stick my head under tonight.

sounds like trimming the inner guard is the only solution short of a 4 inch lift kift.

Cheers, Karl
