I see it being used to stop unloading of the spring on side angles by compressing it a couple of inches.

Of course there is. If a winch is LIFTING 2000lbs, then it must support 2000lbs of load. If a winch is PULLING 2000lbs, the ground underneath the load is supporting the 2000lbs, the winch is only required to overcome the force of friction to move the load, not take the whole load.

Yeah, think of it this way.. you can pull a boat trailer along the road, but you can't lift it above the ground ;)

It does matter, there is a difference. Yeah I know the load is the same etc etc but horizontal loadings are calculated differently to vertical ones.

EDIT: posted this and then saw the above two posts, got excited to be able to contribute to tech :oops:
