Power Steering LEAK FJ40
Power stering leaking!
Any one out there able to help? i have a intermitant problem with the power steering leaking on my FJ40. It had a power steering conversion done with everything up graded to 75 series and all works fine except for the occasional leak from the power steering pump (Toyota). The leak comes from the output shaft to the pully and the leak only seems to occure when its worked real hard. EG trying to find traction in deep ruts or after a hard full on section of throwing the old girl around. The pump thats on is fully reconditioned and replaced the excisting one that had the same problem.
The power steering center says it wll always happen when trying to turn the wheels, when they cant actually turn EG in deep ruts or in simialr situations where the steering is been overlaoded. Is this just bullshit or true is there a more suitable pump out there, if so what?
Any help welcome Matt

Thanks for that but i had recon pump fitted to cure it but to no avail and im now on my third pump, so it seems more of a pump problem than a seal problem. It only leaks under extrem pressure when on the simexs at 6psi. I know its the o'ring the fluid passes and these have been replaced in the past. It runs dry at all other times with not even a slight leak.scotto wrote:I reckon that happened to me once and to fix it i got a kit and replaced a couple of o-rings.
I was woundering if an oil cooler is the way to go?
I used to run a front lock rite locker and 33s and at 20 pound and the oil used to get so hot it would p!ss out all over the place imo the strain
I run 34s through 60 steering and sometimes has struggled a bit.
So got a power steering cooler from a Magna it's mounted in front of radiator - and the on/out pipes off it bend around the side of it perfect for a 40 had no complaints since. A mate who runs 36s seems to have cured a similar problem too. Will take a pic...

Great thanks for that, it was certainaly one of the posibilities i was looking into. My power steering pump sits right next to the extractors too on my 2F which wont help either. Without pulling the headlight surround off, here's how the magna cooler slotted in. Made a bracket with angle and it's mounted to headlight surround panel. My front is very busy - leights, winch, I have not had heating problems cause of airflow, but it is a diesel.
Matt - start a members thread mate and feed us some pics that 40 sounds orrrsome and where are ya
Robbo see if this covers it...

HEHE yep I had to winch up behind him in the hole, the jeep could not winch him out from infront battery died winching himself through, winched him from behind on a winch block. We did talk him in to driving the above hole without a winch though.marin wrote:hehe, thats me!!
