GU to GQ axle swap

Post by Heyder »

I am considering replacing my gq axle assemblies (disc to disc) with GU ones. Is there anything I need to consider with this or is it just a straight forward swap with maybe a new steering arm on the front?

I think even the steering arm should be the same?? The TRE taper is the same.

seen it done with diff assemblys out of a 2.8 td GU, just had to make a new steering arm, wizard performance will make you one.
if your diffs are from a petrol, brakes may be different, might pay to check.
shane :)

From what I have been told, the pitman arm is different. IE the steering arm mounts to it from the opposite side to the GQ.

hhmhmm... there is no threads to be different, the drag link is 1 peice cast.. must be the length I guess, the knuckle is a completely different casting so that would make sense :?:

I was talking to a bloke who has fitted a GU Steering box to his GQ he said the difference was the TRE mounts into the top of the GQ pitman arm and into the bottom of the GU Pitman arm or vise versa.

Must be visa-versa, cause the GQ one definately is on the bottom. That would explain everything though.. The stock drag link is cast so you couldnt just twist one end around half a turn to make it work.. :D

Yeah I knew it was one or the other, for his he just cut the end off turned it around and welded it. He said if he did it again though he'd just get an aftermarket adjustable one.

So swapping the steering box needs the drag link or the pitman changed, but swapping the axle shouldn't make any difference, as the drag link goes into the knuckle exactly the same.. As long as the length is the same-ish....

yeah, i'd say so. As long as you use the GQ Draglink and as you said as long as it is a similar length.

I really couldn't be bothered, I don't think the small strength gain is worth the big $$ and the tie-rod is still in a dumb spot. But the dude who started the thread should be able to bolt his straight in :D

This has reminded me of another question I was going to ask :!:
