get a fiberglass canopy for the tray and punch the window out the back of the cab and join it all up with a flexible waterproof coupling, F100 ambulance style. assuming you have a styleside tray. they can be sealed up pretty well and decked out as a camper or whatever for minimal $$. dow50r off this board picked up a decent fiberglass canopy on ebay for $20 so there are bargains out there.
or just trade/sell the ute and buy a wagon, you will not save anything doing a swap. my guess for a good straight body will all panels and interior would be $3000ish, but good luck finding one - most wrecks are wrecks because they've been in a prang.
I have always had wagons but there are many times when I want a ute - like for hardcore offroad stuff the ute always wins - so much less bodywork to bust. but then when I go camping or load 8 people in the 80 I think hurrah for wagons.

always a good source for info (thats why i ask ya )... cheers dunce
i had a canopy once upon a time, but i hated it. sold it for $600. the ute is handy, but i would prefer a wagon for the same reasons as you. putting stuff in and poeple (stereo gear, air tank and i wanna put draws in etc etc)
i was hoping somone would have a wagon and want a dually ute. i think it might be too much effort anyway. more of a daydream than a serious idea

with a dual cab you have the best of both worlds! you can only fit 2 more people in a surf/4runner if it has the back back seats in, and much less gear!
(except the bed of a dually is not long enough to sleep in :()
I've thought about getting rid of my surf and getting a dual cab Lux a few times, i was thinking about it agian yesterday.
I got the wagon coz i had no use for a ute, so the wagon has been great to me i sleep in it while camping. But i want to put drawers in the back, which then i want be able to use it how i used to.
And as im getting more and more in to offroad 4x4ing, less panel would be great like dunce said.
have to move the last body mount i believe, as the runner chassis is agodd foot shorter than the standard hilux chassis

running gear,
I knwo its shorter then a dual cab, just for the fact when i park next to my brother can ealisy notice the the difference
I was offered $4500 (body, interior etc..) for mine when I was thinking of putting a late model hilux extra cab body onto the 4runner chassis. It was from a minitruck guy who was planning to drop the 4runner body onto a 2wd chassis.
