Post by Nigel »

I was after some feedback from people who have converted there GQ 4.2 patrols from points to electronic ingition.
What system did people use and how easy was it to fit and was there any inprovement in performance and fuel economy.

Thanks in advance

i have owned 5 gq's and put electronic in all of them. last two being crane cams. never had any dramas with any of them except for the last one. module kept playing up and truck would just cut out. replaced under warranty never had problem again. definitely ran better than with points. i kept burning the points out. i was in local arb today. saw brochure for new pirahna set up. sounds good.

Definate increase in performance compared to shitty fluctuating points, economy too if you don't use the loud pedal more because you can

I had the Piranah kit ($300) and it would be fine for 90% of owners, but went to the Crane Fireball system ($600) for better response between 5000 & 6500rpm :D

I used the $50 Jaycar kit. I'm not a mechanic, but am an electical engineer . . . it was easy. Results? I don't reckon any more power directly, however the timing does not drift, at all. Definately better on the points. And the car runs much smoother. I got a second kit and second coil for a spare given that price. Works extremely well, as long as you mount it in the right spot out of moisture.

I have a Pertronix ignitor and it is more reliable now. Before i was replacing points every 5000km. It also fits inside the dizzy. No box needed in the engine bay.

Phil sells them for $200 to your door or $250 fitted when i got mine done.

Well worth it.
