Feroza batteries- larger.

Just a bit of info that may help someone help.

Standard Feroza batteries are a tiny NS40 at only 280CCA . The battery tray is larger (longer) than the NS40 and gives the option of upgrading to a larger battery with more grunt.

After shopping around a bit I found a few options:
1. Optima Yellow Top D51 (~$300) 500CCA and I think requires battery terminals changed to large style. Two year warranty.
2. Supercharge Gold MF55B24R Calcium 430CCA, small size terminals and 30 month warranty. http://www.supercharge.com.au
3. ABI Calcium NS60 (~$80) 450CCA, small size terminals and 36 month warranty. http://www.abisb.com (calcium models not listed on website)

I bought the ABI NS60 Calcium model from a local battery shop- couldn't go past it considering the price and the three year warranty.

The NS60 is not commonly stocked, but is available. A few places were trying to flog to me more commonly available (but smaller capacity) batteries with the larger terminals saying they would just fit some new terminals to the wiring loom.... No thanks!

why not just replace the clamps with larger ones and manufacture a new tray then you would be limiting yourself to only those batterys you listed. Although $80 is pretty cheap for a 450cca I managed to squeeze a full size truck battery approx 800cca in.
I thought you had a dual battery set up too?

I didn't want to re-terminate the factory wiring loom with new terminals as unless they're crimped correctly it's something else that will go wrong. (I don't trust other people to do electrical work due to past experiences.)

I didn't want to butcher up the metal tray that supports the battery (which is what limits the battery width - length & height aren't a problem.) I also wanted to retain the plastic tray under the battery to catch any acid spills, which means 135 x 240mm is about the max size.

Yes, I have got dual batteries. The aux is purely used for power with the ignition off; it doesn't help the main battery with the ignition on due to the way the electronic controller functions. The only time it provides assistance to the main is when cranking- and this was masking the fact it was stuffed.

The new alternator is great, but having electric thermo fans is placing a large drain on the electrical system at idle (with headlights on etc, stuck in traffic.) Even the new alternator will probably struggle at idle due to them needing a few revs to reach full output - hence the larger battery. I'm also going to install an air bypass solenoid to bump up the idle when the thermos kick in and boost the alternator output. It only takes a drop of about 0.5V for the thermos to noticeably slow down!

280 -> 450 CCA is also a huge jump in capacity, and worth trying for the price. It was trade price BTW.

If I still have problems then I'll try wiring the thermos to the aux battery and see how that goes.

I'm not sure James. Shouldn't be much more considering I was told my price was $260 for the Optima which retails for around $300.

I actually paid $72- so my guess would be $80 - $90? It's the best warranty I've seen for any battery - Optima only give a 2yr warranty.

You may find the same battery for sale rebadged as some other brand. The calcium ones seem to be the best for capacity.

Delkor also make a calcium to fit that's 460CCA with a two year warranty. The local distributor didn't have any in stock though ( I didn't get a price, but imagine it would have been dearer as it's a known brand.) Another option is Absorbed Power make an AGM (Absorbed Glass Matt) battery that will fit. It appears to be more of a deep cycle though? - RRP is $189. They're supposed to be very good at recharging fast and more resistant to vibration.

so basically wat is the BEST VALUE 4 MONEY battery that fits in the standard terminals n tray on a 94 widetrack feroza yet has a better CCA rating. reason y i need to know is cause my factory battery is dead as a door nail n i need to upgrade due to sound system increased performance and additional lighting.
i just need one that performs well for daily drivin use.

The one I bought- ABI NS60 Calcium- straight bolt in with no mods. Other options are as listed above.

You'll need to go to a large battery place that stocks a large range of batteries. Your average small place will not stock an NS60 and will try to sell you something else that will need mods done or be a lower capacity. Ring around first.

380cca (though it said 350cca in the book) was on the sticker of the one i got for a customer last week and it had both the small and large posts on it.

i have a sealed Odysey 800cca battery in my Mr2, it's actualy slightly smaller in size than the original NS40.

i also have a 750 cca optima red top battery that was jus slightly smaller than the factory standard size battery. did an excellent job of retaining starting power after leaving the stereo/map/sub on while its on accessory mode for hours.

Every place I mentioned NS60 to questioned me about it fitting a Feroza. The calcium alloy versions (like I've got) have a lot higher CCA and reserve capacity eg. mine is 450CCA.

I just stuck a battery straight out of a Falcon in mine...

cut off the each terminal and replaced it with one that has the 2 bolts and a plate that you brace down on the wire. And for the Positive (+) i replaced it with a terminal that has the vertical bolt with the wing nut.
The battery is over sized for the tray but WGAF and bought a multifit 7" batter holder.. spent about $14 all up from Supercheap or wherever it was.

Been out twice since and not a problem.

The battery is a few years old, but it was a freebie from a mate and it seems to be going ok so far.

I just picked up a Supercharge Gold 600CCA large posted battery for the Feroza. Took the auto electrician all of 5 minutes to install it as some nice person had already changed mine over to the large terminals !

Can you say DOUBLE THE CRANKING POWAH BABY !

Had to get rid of the drip trey under it though.

Price: $106 with a 3 year warranty.

i put a Besco 57 450cca into mine.
fits well, all i had to do was bend the metal tabs (pic below) out a bit, put 2 new terminals on and a new 7" bracket.

Well my elcheapo ABI battery died three days ago. The engine was barely cranking over and the battery was continuously drawing current off the battery charger when I tried to charge it.

The good news is the three year warranty came in use and they swapped it over no questions asked. They even replaced it with a calcium "Puma" battery which is made/ owned by Delkor. I've still got just under a year's warranty left too.

My Exide POS died a couple of weeks ago, couldn't get a "decent" battery anywhere in reasonable time in Melbourne

So, had to buy a "Heavy Duty" POS...we'll see how this one lasts

I have the smallest Exide Extreme battery available in mine. All i had to do was bolt on the bigger terminals and remove the standard plastic tray and buy a bigger battery bracket to hold it in.
I am still looking at alternator options. I have the ribbed belts allready and am trying to find an applause alternator with the bracket, Daihatsu parts seem to be getting rare in perth.
