4 spd top loader

Post by yella_rangie »

i amthinking of puttin a 351 or similar into my rangie. can any 4 spd manual boxes be mated up to the transfer in these? i want to use the original transfer but i want to use like a top loader box. also if anyone has done this mod where abouts does the shifter end up in the cab? does it end up further back? thanks

The rangie 4spd will be strong enough. You would need someone to make a new extension housing for the top loader to mate it to an lt230 or mdified lt95 which would be expensive. There was a post of Sam or Ruff using a b/w 4spd box from a ford f series i think ? Could use this to mate a ford v8 to.
Saddle up tonto, its the not so loanrangie! . 98 TDI DISCO lightly modded with more to come.

why not mate the top loader to a series transfer case. added bonus of part time 4wd. easier to do this than adapt a 351 to a lt95. (unless there is a kit already)

there was a guy that organised short course racing up north that had a series 2 or 3 with ford v8, toploader and series transfer.
good combination but hard to get decent low ratio compared to other rover stuff(lt230,lt77,r380,lt95)
still a very strong combination though.
i think his ute was in 4wd monthly a few years back.

Before Sam fitted the mog axles, he did have a T18 to a modified LT95 transfer case (most of LT95 gear case removed and modified mainshaft).

IIRC this combination is still running in someone elses truck/buggy.

I'm a Ford nut, (still have my XE ESP 351 4sp) and have always wanted a Ford V8 powered RR. There is not a lot of demand, so there are no kits available. I couldn't force myself to fit Holden stuff (yes I know the 3.5 is a Buick).
Personally I'd go an auto with a 351, even though I only drive manuals.
It would be far smoother. Plenty of torque. Plenty of acceleration. Smoother changes (won't break drive train). The only drawback would be on descents.

ive been thinkin about this...i used to have a disco V8 that was an auto. and id have to say it did have its advantages. alot easier to crawl over things than burning the ring out of a clutch! im thinking an auto would be alot easier on the whole driveline to....would that be correct?

yes the auto is easier on the drivetrain.
avm in melb. raced a rangie with zf in winch challenges and obc'c for years.
things can be done to strengthen the auto, and the lock up/convertor can be played with as well.
there is info in the general section

That was Glen. He has a SIII with the specs as above - ford V8, top loader, series T-case. Went well, and aparently the ford box can handle quick gearchanges, unlike the LT95. He used to be on here as v8grunt, but haven't heard from him for a while.

Sort of, like a few of us he runs suffix B low range gears in a later model case.

The std. SIIA/SIII low range is 2.5:1. For a few hundred $$$ you can buy the intermediate and low range gears for a suffix B case (new) and do the conversion. The suffix B gears are 2.8:1 (but suffix B and earlier gearboxes had higher ratios so the overall low was the same).

Do not use suffix A gears as the intermediate shaft is smaller.
