fj45 gearbox question

Post by brentlee »

hi, just joined the forum. great info in here. i have a question and my search came up with few answers.

i have an fj45 ute (purchased yesterday) with 2f? petrol motor and 4 sp manual box. i have been offered a 5 speed from a 75? series troopie and 3f motor. is this a straight swap or are mods needed and will this be a better box when i eventually drop thye 253 in it? i was looking at just swapping the box or should i swap both?

thanks

Most likely you will have to resize both driveshafts as the 5 speed/transfer from the 75 would be longer. What year is your FJ45?

The bellhousing and clutch would suit the 2F. The shifter would sit about 4" behind the present shifter location, some cutting of the floorpan would be necessary.

If your FJ45 is a troopie, you may need to refit the parking brake to the 75 transfer. This can be an involved process, or you may opt for parking brake Marks4WD kit which seems to be much easier to fit without tearing apart the transfer. If yours is a trayback (cab chassis) your parking brake may already be on the rear diff. No worries there.

the fj is a 1977. i was hoping to be able to bolt the 5 speed straight in with just maybe a floorpan mod. any idea of cost to get shafts changed over?

thanks
ps what is the 3f like as a motor (fuel consumption etc) and would it be a straight swap for 2f
