thoughts on 40 series ?
hi everyone,
dont usually post in the toyota section as i run a pajero, so hi to everyone.
my daughter is looking at buying a 40 series and i was wondering what you guys thought of the vehicle we have seen.
its a 1984 42 series swb hardtop.
factory 5 speed
factory air cond
3.4 diesel, 325,000km
rear wheel carrier
new starter motor and glow plugs
uhf radio and stereo
body looks pritty good with some small area's of rust hear and there.
interior looks nice and clean with factory tachometer and resonable seats.
front springs look very 'flat' ? with only about an inch of travel before bumpstops. is this normal ?
drives ok, noisy and bouncy, but i guess they are all like that ?
the car has done very little in the last ten years, as the owner passed away and his dad kept it for sentimental reasons, using it for variaty club bashes.
he is asking $3000.
if we kept it a few years and fixed it up do you think it would lose much money on it if we sold it?
any comments would be greatly appreciated.
cheers

For that price it sounds good - i don't think you'll lose much money if any, as a very good condition one of those still gets $5000-6000.
And air con!.....
Flat springs fairly standard as they get older, if it's only noisy and bouncy you've got a good one. If it's jet engine loud at speed and bucks your back teeth out when you go near a bump then your driving the dream baby!. Or maybe my troopy is a one-off....

Don't get it,
Just tell me where it is
Nah sounds sweet to me, if you put a 2inch lift kit and some (I like them) ranchos in you might just cure your sag and bounce issues.
All in all sounds like a sweet truck though.
PS Earmuffs and above mentioned mods will make it a dream to drive like you pajero

Something witty said by someone famous
Im here for the sausage!
As busiboy said above....
DONT BUY IT!!!
for 3K i would take it if it were a bit closer to me.
I would go there now, give him 3K and drive off laughing.
as everyone said no race car, but its solid, reliable, cheap to fix or do up, plenty of fibreglass panels around.
Best 4x4 ever! especially on a budget and in aust.
the parts are interchangeable and upgradeable easily.
they ride harsh but its part of the charm.
my only regret is mine isnt a diesel, and isnt Power steer-yet.......
p.s cool chick if she digs a 40!!!!

thanks for your coments guys, much appreciated.
one thing that seams strange is that it doesnt have power steering ! some info i read on them stated that the later ones had it ? anyway we are still trying to convince mum that it is a good buy ! my daughter is only 12 so its not as if she will be driving it for a while ! plan was to slowly do it up, then she could learn in it.
she wants spotties on the roof, lift kit, bucket seats, double diff locks, power steering, hot pink camouflage paintwork !! etc, so it will cost me a packet !!!!!!!
trouble is i quite fancy it myself ! will have to talk the work boss into selling the ute i drive, so i would have to buy a car then !!
anyway thanks again and will let you all know if we do get it.

Power steering was an option in the 1979+ models. You can also fit a power steering unit off a solid axle Hilux with a custom made bracket to adapt it to the frame attachment pod. Do a search on this forum, I think there was a post or two that described it.
Like the others said, it is a good deal.
It sounds like you want it for yourself But, hey, whatever it takes to get it past the missus.

Air con aint all its cracked up to be. My Bj's got it along with power stear, 5 speed box and all above mentioned rattles and shakes but the air really struggles to do anything on a hot day. Nothing like uising the pop out vents at your feet anyway. Geeze people laugh when they see me pop em out and tell em it air con.
Cheers........HB

I'd rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal labotomy.
Yeah mine had air con when i bought it but I found the same problems as you experienced it is now proberly sitting under about 1km of rubbish at the tipHellbelly wrote:Air con aint all its cracked up to be. mine's also got new door rubbers, bailey channel rubbers...so with all that its still not worth me fitting aircon?
i've also blanked off the holes in the floor from some nobhead bolting shit, also small little rust holes here n there and fitted new seals to the side vents and heater fan box.
and yes...those side vents work a treat on your feet on a hot day...

Air Con is the first thing to go, The pump is far more useful as an air compressor for constant air. Drive faster with the windows down and the roof off, now thats air con Oh and open the side vents too.bj42turbo wrote:When mine was a hard top I even tryed putting up a clear pvc screen behind the front seats fiited to a cargo barrier. Thinking this would make less area for the air con to cool still not really very sucessfull

Hey Matt. I've been told about the air being converted to just an air compressor. How hard is this to do?
@BJ 42 Turbo. Nice to see you again. You helped me out with a little advise in another 4x4 forum a year or two (I still cant afford a turbo tho ).
