grounding/humming noise??
Moderator: -Scott-
grounding/humming noise??
On the weekend I did something stupid and went through a very deep bog hole, so deep the water was higher than the engine. you can see the water mark on top.
The problem is now I have this grounding/ humming noise from the left side of the engine. Can notice it mostly in the cabin in the passanger side floor, towards the front.
The noise happens in idle and gets louder when I rev the engine, but will fade out when the revs get real high. Also noisy when driving.@ 100ks can just notice it.
Anybody got any idea
Cheers
Glenn

HI,
Could be bearings in an idler pulley or maybe alternator? I know mine were grrowley, replaced a noisy bearing and it was still there, there was a real symphony going on, I also did the alternator bearings, quietned things up no end. And I found it is a real mission to get alternators out of 3.5's!

If you have air con check for crap trapped between the pulley and the main body of the unit.
Pulley bearings gone or even the main bearing in the air con unit itself.
Easiest way to tell is to remove the fan belt from the air con and start the car up - you will tell straight away.

CHEERS GUYS
YES ITS THE AIR COMPRESSOR, THE BEARINGS DROPPED INTO MITSU ON THE WAY HOME. WHEN THE AIRCON IS OFF ITS NOISY THEN WHEN ITS ON IT GOES AWAY TILL IT SWITCHES BACK OFF.
I WAS TOLD MAYBE ABLE TO REPACK IF THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH IT. BUT IF THERE IS $1200 DOLLAROOOOS FOR A NEW ONE.
ANYBODY NO HOW MUCH IT WILL COST ME TO HAVE IT PULLED APART AND REPACKED WITH NEW BEARINGS??
CHEERS
GLENN
ALSO WHY DID THIS HAPPEN? IVE BEEN THROUGH LOTS OF BOG HOLES AND NEVER HAD THIS PROBLEM?

The bearing itself is only about $20 or so bucks from CBC. You will have to release the gas (have someone do it) and remove the unit from the car. Use a bearing puller to remove the Pulley and bearing (fairly easy) and replace.
Get regassed.
or
Fug the air con off and convert the system to an air system.
I run twin air con units - one for a/con and one for air - best of both worlds apart from the air con leaks and I am too tight to pay to get it fixed so I just drive with the windows down and me head hanging out slobbering at the oncoming traffic.
