Hi Folks,
I'm looking for 31" tyres to go on my jimny. They'll do the vast majority of their driving onroad, so longevity on bitumen is really important.
I've looked at BF Goodrich All Terrains, and been quoted $310 each by ARB on rims, installed, balanced etc.
Does that sound any good?
My friend has a smaller diameter set on his jimny, has gotten about 80,000km out of them, and thinks theyre about 1/2 done
Can anyone offer perhaps some alternative options, or experience with them?

My first "big" set of tyres were a set of 33" BFG all terains (man those puppys were HUGE ) I was wrapped in them, moved on to a set of BFG muds and was even happier, a bit noisier and a faster wearing (not much)
As a road/off road tyre A/T's are good, but fresh muds aren't far behind them, as muds wear (past 50%) they start to get load and wander a bit its not huge but it is noticable.
I supose it depends what type of "off road" driving you do.

$310.00 sounds a bit steep.
I have pruchased my tyres from the Tyre Factory BFG M/T 225/75/R16 for $220.00 per corner about 1.5 years ago. I do not think they have increased in price that much..
I am sure the 31" would be a more common size, so you would think would be slightly cheaper.
I have a 99 GV and have done 40,000 Kms on these and they still have about 3/4 tread.. As the Jimmny is lighter,I am sure the tyre ware will be better again.
Have a look at the Coopers also.. The ST or STT series.
Anyway, that is m y 2 cents worth.

89 lux 2bl 4inch spring 35's etc still slow as a snail
I've found the the Simex Centipede Radial MT (not ET's) to be pretty good value. They only come in a 31x10.5 and are wearing well on a lwb Vit and @ $150 ea. They are more aggressive than an AT but fine on the road even in the wet (not too noisy either) and better offroad than an AT. I wouldn't bother with AT's if I was going to use it offroad. Just another option.

I sell whels and tyres for a living and be careful on wheels that are wide enough to take a 31 and the correct off set to fit under your guards. you need a negative ( -12 )offset wheel to clear the tie rod end at the back of the wheel .this leaves you no room to put 10.5 inch tyres on.check the tyre clears the inner guards when on full lock and articulation. they might have the right combo but i havent seen it yet.

I'm tossing up whether to get STT's next (Armor Tech) or bigger BFG Muds, which I'm tending towards since I love the (baby-sized) BFG Muds I have on at the moment. Having just read your post, what type of Cooper's are you referring to? and what kind of terrain tore the lugs off? (do you mean they tore off easily under the same conditions where, say, a Mud would stand up to the punishment without as much carnage?) I'm worried the rubber may be softer on the Cooper STT's.... But damn they look sexy!!!

2 Years ago I think I payed $220.00 (Fitted & Balanced) per corner for the BFG 225/75 R16 M/T's
And that was a good price back then.

Just a little piece of information which I found out recently, and I find quite disturbing. In victoria, you can't go a tyre any wider than 15mm more than what the original tyre was, and can't increase the width of the rim by more than an inch. I'm out in both ways, I hear it's illegal to scratch your ass.
You can get an engineer to approve much larger than that in vic - 30-31 ona sierra no problem
If you were in QLD looking to do the same I'd say you're screwed.
heaps of vic ppl running that size legally. Check out the vic suzy club website and head to a meeting they'll point you to an engineer who can make 31"s legal on your rig.
