More power from the 4Y 2.2litre....

Post by TOY4RUNA »

hey guys,
I just recently purchased a 1987 Hilux 4runner with the 4Y 2.2litre petrol motor..It already has Extractors, unifilter,But was wondering just how much power can be made fom these motors without spending lotsa $$$ on them..And have the 4Y motors always been heavy on fuel..Seeing that they are only a 4cylinder motor..

cheers

Power from a 4Y

Post by YellowRunner »

If you want power, get away from the 4Y. I have a 3Y and it is quite thirsty, but I am running 33"s and 4.88's. Best bet for power and eccono go to a V6 efi or possibly 22R if you dont want the reg and insurance cost of the V6. These will fit with reasonable work.

I have an 86 4Runner with a 4Y running 32" tyres (stock 4.88's) and i don't find it to be all that heavy on fuel, around 12-13L/100km, and it honestly needs a new set of points and plugs and a tune. But that really is dependant on what you call heavy fuel usage. But i also get told i drive like a grandma aswell.

I run a 4y-C and its bored to the max, eletric dizzy, after market cam, extraters bigger exhaust and cut behind the muffler and i also let it idle at above 1000rpm,It pisses all over other 4y carbys but still isn`t worth spending money on

Is there an EFI setup that will adapt to the 4Y with relative ease?
Well I'm guessing that they didn't think everyone would carry on like a big bunch of sooky girls over it like they have........
Looking at a 253 in mine for the time being. Estimate around $1000-1200 all up with engineers. This is until i work out the VORTEC 5.3

well your tank should hold around 65 for single and dual cabs and 73 ltrs of fuel for the xtra cabs and you should be getting a lot more then 80kms off a tank sounds like your fuel gauge isnt working properly if your only putting 30 ltrs in it if that is your problem
