60 series Cold Start problems

Don't know what to make of this. When I start my car, after its been sitting outside all night, it really struggles at idle , really struggles. My manual says it should idle at 650rpm, which it does once it's at op. temp. But when it's cold it's below the 500 mark, sometimes hunting for the desired 650rpm. Anyone had the same problems and/or know what to do.
Should I put up with it, or is there a way to fix it?

For what its worth I use Castrol RX Super 15W 40 oil.

i recond you should just use your choke like most of us old car users do

Theres no choke on mine, I usually pull the hand throttle out a bit.

could be low compression in one or more pistons, get a compression test?

could be your pre(and post) heating system (glow plugs) not working, check to see if there is voltage supplied to glow plugs before and after start. Check all your glow plugs. the glow system should continue heating until engine is up to a reasonable temp.

could be loose fuel lines. Had this with my 2H. it would miss and run really bad at low revs, but at 1500+ it was fine. Took it to diesel place and he tightened the fuel lines and it fixed it straight away. (mine did it when warm aswell though)

Mine used to be a smooth idle from cold start(s) until I changed mechanic recently, now its a bit rougher and seems it miss a couple of beats for the first say 7 seconds perhaps, not very long anyway.

But it also runs a bit sprightlier now, a little bit more pert than it was.

Maybe be a little more conservative on its tuning?

Also when I park in my driveway which is angled higher at the front I always need to start it a second time as the oil pressure takes a bit longer to get up.

If i'm lucky and it is screwed I only have another 150,000k/s left in my 2H before I can blow some cash o a 12H-T :) hehe..

Don't worry, i have the same issue on my 2h. Just pull the hand throttle out a little at idle when it is cold. This will bring the engine rpm up to normal. When it warms up, push the throttle back in.

When the motor is cold, this is fairly normal, as long as it isn't missing.

Your system will still be glowing correctly if the car starts on all cylinders with no smoke, just idling a little lower. As far as i am aware, this just means that the motor isn't up to its most efficient running temperature.

I have this as well, i changed the alt/reg, and replaced all the glow plugs and was surprised to find that it still ran rough on cold starts.... but i will say, you would know if one of your glow plugs was dead cos it would shake like hell.

yep and pump a shitload of white smoke generally.

i guess being in queensland i dont experience the problems you guys do, since its not as cold when i "cold start"

Had the same problem with a 60 series runs very rough when cold ok when you bring the revs up.
The fitting that srews into the pump was loose not the pipe pulled the pipes off tightened all the fittings slightly in the pump and now it runs like a dream.
