4.8 into 4.5 ?

Post by GUEEY »

Considering an engine swap.

any ideas of the going price for a second hand 4.8?
The going price of a low ks 4.5?
and any possiable issues in fitting a 4.8 into a series 1 98 4.5 GU.

i have squeezed as much power out of the 4.5 i can without forced induction,i would like to keep the engine hassel free!

Any ideas or opinions would be great.
Thanks Grant.

300cc on an engine that big would be negligable power increase.

supercharge it or be happy with what you got.

or swap a different engine in - one of those massive v8 diesels from the hummers

i know it dosent seem much, but i have a mate with a 4.8 and he runs 35s with no gearing change and his truck flys!!!.
the 185 Kw engine does seem to make a big differance.
but thanks for the input.

Car's always seem faster in the passenger seat - sure it's not something like that?

What have you currently done to your 4.5 ?

You should be able to get it up to or around the 4.8 power levels with a few modifications.

Have you had it tuned recently ? It could just be running like shit.

Have it dynoed - cost you $30-50 for a power run and will tell you approx how much power it is making.

My Gu has recently been dynoed after i had a duel map Unichip installed.the results were 88Kw at the rear wheels on 35 claws.
it also has pacemaker extractors and a free flow system, unifilter feed through a snorkel.
My truck preforms fine on the flat buy dies in the asre the momment it points up hill.i know 4.6 would help but but more power allround would be great.

It's not only 300cc increase, but a different head (DOHC with 4 valves per cylinder instead of SOHC with 2). The engine itself is much more advanced than a simple increase in capacity.

4.5 has 145Kw whereas the 4.8 has 185Kw. That's just under 30% increase!
