How to take windscreen out

OK,

How do you take the windscreen out of a WT hardtop. And no not a hammer, would like it 1 piece or near to it.

Also would a NT hightop drover windscreen fit a WT hardtop sierra? It looks the same. What screen rubber do i use the WT or NT one.

Nic - seen this done..

get a screwdriver or similar and pull off the rubber all the way around the outside of the windscreen, rip into it...

after that it should simply pop out..

Getting the bugger back in may present some difficulties though, especially if the body is a little wonky or anything like that...

What kinda new one you putting in? im very interested in the polycarb (plastic) screens...

I was going to try that last night but thought there may be other ideas.

Going to hopefully put in the one out if the drover as it is only a few months old. the existing one has a huge crack the whole way accross.

I did not think the plastic screens are legal. also when scratched they are pita it seems.

with my rear window dad used some string and put it in the grove of the window rubber, put one side in and then pulled the string out...wierd..

all windows are the same IIRC.

use a sharp stanely trimmer and just keep cutting as much as the stickerflex away as u can. use your feet from the inside to push it out, dont stick a screwdriver under the edge and try and pry it out.

haha, thanks shane i tried the screwdriver last night. i know what ya mean. I was thinking of the feet trick and will give it a go tonight if got chance.

remember dont be greedy cut as much of the rubber out as humanly possible other wise u will break the windscreen and end up with your shorts full of glass.

Start on an inside top corner and apply steady outward hand pressure while rolling back the inside rubber, you will have to roll back a lot of the rubber before the glass even looks like it will move, be patiant and dont use a steel screw driver to lever directly on the glass, when it is ready to come out step outside the car and lift it off, if you start at the bottom it may just drop out and you can't catch it if you are the inside

To reinstall, spike had it arse about ,
it will be way easier with a mate to help you,
clean any goop off the seal, the glass and the frame,
fit the rubber to the glass and wrap 3.5 metres of small sash cord around the rubber in the frame groove having the rope start and finish at a corner (bottom),
sit the bottom of the rubber (with the glass still fitted) on the bottom of the frame, while your mate (I am assuming you some ) gently applies some inward hand pressure you start to slowly pull the sash out, (this is the cool bit) as the cord is pulled out the seal is rolled out and onto the frame, go slowly all the way around.

all windscreens are the same, including rubber, you will have no problem

Just make sure its the newer style laminated safety glass, if its just a pain of normal glass don't bother keeping it.

New screen for a sierra is relatively cheap. Old glass will break very easily.

I do believe that synthetic glass is available for sierras.

James is spot on here Nic, don't root around with second hand glass it is not worth the effort.

get some piano wire, make a hole in the rubber and push the wire though then pull it though with a sawing motion and you will end up with the rubber all cut away. you will need to rap the ends of the wire though some wood or something fo a handle

Super: I got a new one for the drover about 3months ago and want to use it in the new WT as its is all cracked.

got a piano....any small wire braid rope will do the trick though.

I smashes my oringial windscreen building my roll bar (long story) got a new one put in and rolled my car. It didn't break it just popped out but when i went to put it back in after fixing all the panel work i realised my windscreen hole was squased in one corner and i smashed the glass trying to force it in. Bought a piece of 4mm thick clear perspex (supposedly the stuff they use for bullet proof glass) and cut it to shape. Works a treat but u musn't wash it with the wipers or it scratches.

Best way i found to put them back in is with the rope trick or use one of those big yellow handled screwdrivers and carefully lever the rubber over the lip from the inside whilst somenone pushes gently on the part your levering from the outside. Takes time but does the job.
