trying to get the pitman arm off the steering box end to put in a new box. Are they on a tapered spline? What is the easiest way to get it off?

used the following method a couple of times on a Chrysler Royal I had some years back
loosen nut off
take 2 hammers (large) hold one against the side of the pitman arm (part where the shaft goes through) and strike the oppersite side with the other hammer repeat until either it comes off or you give up and try to find a puller or a bigger hammer
