clunk in front diff

Post by Josh n Kat »

hey guys got an 89 model gq patrol with an air locker in the front diff.

Was 4bing on the weekend and started to get a bad clunk noise very intermiediatly but only with it in low with the hubs locked, unlock the hubs and it wont make the noise. i dont think its a cv cause they usually go bang then the fun stops so it tends to lead me more towards the diff centre.... Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Maybe give it more than 1 hour and 44 minutes for those people to reply.

When the cv went in my lux, it went clunk, bang, grind until I unlocked the hubs and it didn't make a noise for the 50km's I drove it home.

yeah my bad tonka, just got kinda anxious....

i'm not entirtely convinced its a busted cv though cause i can still drive 4b with the hubs locked and the noise is very intermitent.

what about the arb diff centres, anybody have them stuff up at all?

The CV doesn't have to be 'busted' to make noise...

thats also true, but it isn't noisy when you turn the wheel hard and drive. it makes the bad noise if im just cruising down hill just engine braking or cruising up hill just steadily accelerating

Have you drained the oil in the diff? Look out for large metal objects, might be a good place to start.

possibly circlip gone in the centre gears and the pins loose, hapened to me when one of the gears come off, smashed all the teeth and spat it out the diff casing, some times youd here a clunk and it was the pin moving up and down

could be that 1 or 2 teeth have come off the crown wheel, although usually when this happens you get a violent banging noise, check the oil for chunky metal bits
