What Gearbox and Transfer Case Oil to use in the Luxie???

Hi Guys,

Want to do a bit of maintenance to the old luxie before Saturday nights
trip up the coast.
I have replaced most stuff, air-filter, oil-filter, engine oil, etc,
but I wanna swap my gearbox and transfer-case oils.

I used Castrol GTX MAGNATEC for the old 22R engine
LSX-90 LSD fluid for F&R air-lockers
BUT
What oil do I use for the gearbox and transfer case??
What brand, and what viscosity are we talking here? I'll go and
buy it tonight from supercheap, so any answers you guys can come
up with would be sweet.

any GL4 or 5 anywhere from 75-80(w) - 90-140 will do. you could try Dexron ATF in the transfer to squeeze a tad more efficiency out of it.


why are you going to dumb stockton instead of willowglen??

Just did the Transfer case in the 80 and the workshop book says GL5,SAE 75w-90 so should be the same.

random decision and stocktons was the winner?
I don't actually know why, but it sounds like fun so we are going up there.
My mate may be bringing his dune buggy along!!
And I think Ryan is going to race it wit the 5.0L!!

Whats the difference between
75w - 80?
75w - 90?
75w - 120?
Which is best for the luxie 5-speed gearbox though?
And this dexron ATF you speak of, what viscosity is it?
Where can I get it from and what is it usually used for?
And if I can't get the dexron ATF, which of the above
mentioned gear oils should I use?

How long ago did you do the change? Does it work better now?
Are you happy with the 75w-90?

I did it on Sunday and haven't really noticed much difference, maybe a little less clunky i suppose. I don't think it had the right oil in there before hand, it was really thin and this is the first oil change since I've had it.

I've been swapping between Dexron ATF and the normal 75W-90 oil
in the transfer case and I can't really tell the difference.
Both seem to work well enough.

Which one will provide more protection from wear in the long term?
The 75W-90 or the Dexron Auto Trans Fluid??
Not so worried about a smooth change from 4H to 4L, but more
concerned with big loads on the transfer from twin lockers.

I was thinking also, what about that Lucas oil stabilizer stuff??
can I put a bit of this into the transfer? Or is this stuff overated??

better extreme pressure performance from the hypoid gear oil (the 75/90 stuff) but better fuel economy and slightly cooler operation from the dexron. Probably better to stay away from the Lucas Stabiliser - very thick oil can gererate a lot of heat uner highway conditions, and you can get film shearing which ends up with metal to metal contact between gears. maybe a small mount could help a wearing gearbox but gearboxes are designed for a specific oil thickness.

I will stick with the Hypoid Gear Oil then (75w90)
in both the transmission and the transfer case.
I can also buy in bulk and save $$

Oh and before I change the oil,
The front and rear seals on the transfer case seem to be leaking
slightly (only a little bit wet) is there anything I can do to help
prolong the life of these seals? I was speaking to carts the other
night and he said its a pretty easy job to change the seals, but I
am hesitant to try
