Just wondering, is there any way of telling the condition of a gearbox while out of the car. I just swapped over my gearbox cause I thought it was better than my one, and now it's crunching 1st and 3rd. My dad said that should be the synchros. I wanna put the old one back in but I don't know whether it's noisy or not (shot bearings). Is there any way of telling before I swap them over?
Also, very important question. For as long as I can remember, when lifting the clutch in neutral the car sounds different. In neutral with the clutch in the only sound is that of the engine, but lift the clutch and on my old box I used to get a faint little noise. On the box I got now it's tonnes worst. Is this normal?
Oh also, by turning the input shaft, the output shaft turns immediately with little or no play, which is good, but I get a little rattle as I turn it back and forth, is this normal?

Quick gearbox question.
all 1.3 sierra boxes have syncros, the nosie from ur clutch pedal is ur thrust bearing, while its apart put a new 1 in there, and the play in the input shaft is normal because there is 1 bearing supporting it , the front of the input is supported by the pilot bearing in ur flywheel so check that out as well.
I'm not too sure what to think about that mate cause this is after putting a clutch kit into it which comes with the bearing. The thrust bearing is the one that pushes out yeah? Anyways, after putting the new gearbox in, today I put in the old one again and it pretty much goes sweet as. Same noise when the clutch pedal is up, but nowhere near as bad.bazooked wrote:all 1.3 sierra boxes have syncros, the nosie from ur clutch pedal is ur thrust bearing, while its apart put a new 1 in there,
its is quite normal to hear a very slight whirring noise when you take your foot of the clutch in neutral as your gearbox internals start to spin, they just have no load on them. You will find any car makes a different sound in the box when liftng or depressing the clutch.
