Front Pinion Flange Nut (PITA)

Post by vanzbrown »

Anyone know if this by some chance is reverse thread on my 60series...

Its being a real pain in the arse.

Tried everything and spent the best part of yesterday arvo trying to work it loose.... Buying a metre long piece of tube pipe to put on the end of the socket for a bit more leverage today.

Driving me nuts, the back one was easy enuff... But this one...Grrrr.

It is normal, right-hand threaded like the rear. Did you undo the staking? If you use a strong rattle gun and block the wheels (lock the hubs of course) you don't even have to undo the stake.

as Dave said - rattle gun will pop it off, usually you won't even need to lock the hubs, the inertia of the whole assembly is enough to get it off. if you don't have a rattle gun, most garage workshops will pop it off for you for a sixpack.

Yeah, ended up cutting it off with a drill and chisel... Had a 3 foot bar trying to get it off and bent a sidcrome L-Socket Extention...

Noticed to, that even when the new seal and nut, done up tight, there is still play in the pinion gear... Dont think this is normal as the rear wasnt like this. Is it possible the bearing further up the line is warn.

Could it be anything to do with the fact that the back of the pinion flange had groves on the back of the shaft which would suggest that its rubbing somewhere...

NOt to worried about it, but just not to sure either.

Thanks guys.

There should be no play there, the pinion bearing may be toast. Perhaps the seal is leaking because there is too much play in the bearing.

Pinion flanges can develop wear with high kms. If you can get your fingernail to catch on the grooves, it's time to get a new one or get a Speedi Sleeve placed at a machine shop.
