Tailshaft Issue

Post by whiteknight »

Just noticed that my rear tail shaft on my 96 Lux is showing half an inch of the spline while sitting on flat ground. Is that normal or should you see no spline on a 2 piece shaft?

What are the options and dollars to rectify this apart from getting a new tailshaft? Spacer? Shaft from a diff model?

I did a search and think i read about a double cardinal joint will extend it somewhat?

Anyone on here make spacers if this is the way out?

i sugest youn take out the tail shaft and hit yourself in the head with it
it is normal to allow the diff forward and back movement when you compress the bushes hope this helps

Hmm.. I realise that but didnt think you were meant to see any of the spline itself while on flat ground? If I am wrong thats OK and good as it wont cost me anything..

I have moved my diff back using IFS rears but never took any notice of the tailshaft before now. So I have nothing to worry about?

ahhh you moved the diff back so your shaft is extended
it looks to be a long way out so a tailshaft extension looks to be the answer or a spacer as you said
measure where it was siting before and space it or lengthen it to the original resting position and problem solved hope ya liked the joke

Can you get spacers that wide or better to get the shaft lengthened?

It is a 2 piece shaft - does that mean it has the double cardinal joint? or should I put one in?

lengthen the shaft will be better for short and long term.

double cardinal joint gives you more travel in the uni's on tight angles it's basically looks like one end of the shaft has two uni's one behind the other.

So a double cardinal joint will increase the length 2 or 3 inches by the sounds of it?

Whats the go in outting one of these in - what model do they come off etc? Is it just a matter of pressing them on?

Or too much work and just lengthen the shaft?

If its the standard shaft (which it looks like) then no it doesnt have a double cardan joint, it has a centre bearing.

This is what a double cardan looks like...

on yours you can see the centre bearing joining the 2 piece shaft.

I havent had any probs with my tail shaft since swapping IFS rears in and its extended about 20mm, though none of the spline is showing.

i wouldnt bother with a dc on the rear you dont havea huge lift to need one, if you get ur shaft extended get it done so you dont have to run the center bearing ne more and run it backwards so the neck is at the diff giving a lil more clearance

the reason the shaft is that way round in the pic is to stop water sitting in the slip and spline, ive seen to many that have failed/siezed because of this. and yes extend the rear of the shaft and get it balanced as a twin.

Wokred out my tailshaft dilema.
As from the pics you can see i needed an extra 3 inches or so. Picked up a one piece shaft from an old 4 speed Hilux for $50 that fit perfectly just had to change the flanges on each end.

Just thought I'd let yas know in case anyone else is in the same boat..

Picked up up from 4x4 engineering as he has closed down and was trying to offload his bits left.

Its slightly longer than a std 2 piece I am not sure if it would fit if you havent done the IFS rears mod , might fit if you have a fair bit of lift best bet is to just measure it up..
