Hope i'm not behind the times with this idea but haven't read anything about it before.

with sierras getting scarcer and the interest in them growing we may have to source other vehicles to modify.

i know the rear leafs are the same set up and the rear diff is the samish(4 bolt). knowing suzuki i would bet the chassis is the same (or very similar) to the LWB sierras.

they came in 1.0 and 1.3 in vans utilitys etc. The shift linkage would probally be special but engines g/box etc should be the same..anyone with access to one with some know please insert head under for a look..

1.6..transfer transplant..wider diffs front /rear..35's..'A' team paint job. wow its just flowing out of me.

there is enough sierra tech around to make this a real possability. however a cage and front bar would be a must. Imagine stepping out the cab onto your 35" boggers to step down..

and cheap base vehicle too.



anyone reconise the chassis ?

any info you can contribut would be great as i havent had a real good look at one yet.

I've thought about this myself. although with the older stlye carry van without the high roof. I've seen one up on a hoist with a SWB sierra sitting directly underneath, they were about the same wheel base. I first got the idea after seeing a Bedford van with a overlander setup up at wedge Is. I dont know about 35 boggers but maybe a set of 325/60 15 BF Goodrich (approx 31/12.5 R15) would keep the body roll down. And maybe not the A Team paint (i'd get sick of people throwing rocks at me.haha), maybe you have a twisted mind too, i like the idea. Maybe next time i've got an excess of cash and nothing better to do???

There was a 660cc model available here in NZ a few years ago that came with a spare set of rims with quad bike tyres on them. It also had a 6 speed gearbox, where the crawler first gear could only be selected in 4wd.

Yeah Grimbo, our young pete is thinking hard about it. he has asked a few questions in the Diahatsu section, as they make a mini 4wd van as well.


There is also a guy in WA wheeling a L300

It wouldn’t be to hard to SPOA it, add some crawler gears, cut the wheel well and add some bigger tires. Just have to remember to keep some weight on the back!. Would make an awesome fishing/camping rig!

Oops time to step out of the cupboard
I have always had a Hafliger fetish, and a carry van cut down to the floor level is going to look a lot like one
the newer ones are full time 4x4 with no low range
but the old ones are selectable duel range,
picture one with a small set of muddies a pair of diff locks and a solid front axle, a nice bit of cage work going all the way to the back
it would be as flash as a rat with a gold tooth
I passed an older carry 4x4 tray last week (the first one I have ever seen) and it got me fired up, pity I couldn't catch it (I was in the truck), I know were a diahatsu 4x4 hijet van is, and it is for sale, but I realy want a suzuki.

THE ENGINES ARE NOT THE SAME AS A SIERRA.. SOME HAD A LJ 50 2 STROKE, F6A,F8A, G10A,AND A G13BB.

I know of someone who put an (old) carry motor into a sammy. Good news is they are exactly the same, bad news is the carry motor spins the other way So this guy had a sammy with 5 gears backwards and 1 forward

I know a guy i here in Tumut that has one. Way cool. I'd also like to turn one into an offroad weapon. Great visibility from the front. It might feel a little hairy on a big downhill, a good cage would put ya mind at rest though.

When I was in Cains recently I saw a Mitsubishi L300 van that had been cut down to the floor line and converted to a ute
it was tops (for a Mitsubshi ).
