Those axles were originally fitted to Volvo C303 (4x4), C304 (6x6) or C306 (heavier 6x6) forward control vehicles.known 2 wrote:i'm sorry i don't understand what a volo or is it volvo portal is could someone explain?, but it does look cool
Portal gear reducing boxes at the wheels increase the under axle clearance by approx 125mm.
John
I have seen heaps of french military vehicles in my travels over here, and they have all been renault 4x4 and 6x6 trucks (haven't noticed portals) and a small 4x4 that looks like a copy of the puch/g-wagen. I think they may have had some pinzgauers (sp?) a long time ago...up2nogood wrote:Just came back from New Caledonia and noticed the Froggie army use some sort of light Mog like truck with portals.
Anyone know what they are?
edit - was it one of these? It is a Marmon-Simca V8 - with portals

Yep, looks the same. Probably old machinery, as they don't have too many wars in NC. Well, not since 1988 anyway.
Wonder if they have diff locks??
The website says they have "rear diff locks" - whatever that means - so they must at least have 1.up2nogood wrote:

Flathead Ford V8 100 bhp Petrol engine, 4-speed full synchro gearbox, Hi/low transfer case, rear diff locks, high portal axles, coil suspension, 1M articulation, 0.33M ground clearance, 60% gradability.

Dunno if that would be the rig then. How bloody old would it be to run a flathead V8?
Might have to bug the army back over there to see if I can find out.
By the way, I saw a dude with a white Disco on portals a couple of weeks back, in Sydney. He had "sunnyside up 4x4 club" on his windscreen. Anyone know it?
