Smoke From Rear Wheel!!

Post by bigbluemav »

Hi All

After driving approx 8km's this am, I got out of the Mav' and noticed smoke wofting from the left rear wheel.(   )

Thinking, this is not good..........I haven't even taken the wheel off yet (tomorrow job due to not getting home until 7:45pm) what could it be?

I'm thinking wheel bearing... but couldn't hear any squealing from the wheel, but the p/s window was up, d/s window down and I don't hear much over the engine and half worn MT/R's.

Haven't had any prob's with rear brakes, but with smoke, I'm thinking wheel bearing.

What does everyone think, what else should I look for, what else could it be?

As usual, all help greatly appreciated.

Handbrake is on the driveshaft.
Seized or semi-seized rear caliper, either the piston or the sliders.

Ahhhh....that's something I didn't think of!! I've got a habit of thinking worst case scenario, but then again, replacing disc pads and a caliper I'm thinking won't be cheap hey?!

I assume to check, check wear on pads??

this is a common problem on GQ's, as the slides seize, piston can seize, and brakes often have pressure applied, best bet is to, remove calliper and check cage slides first then check to see if the piston slides, should slide easiely,

Should be a lot of fine black crap around wheel rim & on caliper. More than whats on the other side.

Ta for the replies all, I'll take off both wheels today and compare.

I'm assuming the seizing of the sliders is the initial problem and that this is caused by a build up of waste pad material, so I'll clean up both sides.
