Bonnet Advice!

Post by Crawford »

need some advice.. my bonnet has faded paint... and has a 5cm^2 rust hole in the middle where the little hook thing is..

I can get a bonnet from the wreckers in perfect condition but it has maroon paint on it.. will cost me about $100.. i was going to buy this and paint it black?
will i have to scrap the old paint off it or what? and will a black bonnet on a sierra look ok? i would put a SUZUKI white sticker on it to break up the black a bit i was thinking!

other option is, is a bonnet scoop and paint my current bonnet.. not sure how much this will cost.. and bonnet scoop might look a bit stupid on a sierra..

OR.. i can get them to fibre glass the hole in my current bonnet but they are worried when they doing some welding its going to be to hot and its going to warp the whole bonnet.. and they said it will only last 1 - 2 years.

There is a bonnet which is the same colour as mine at suziwest but it is also faded and they are asking $300 for it..$300 to fix a rust spot seem sa bit steap.. buyin a good condition bonnet for $100 and painting it black until i can afford the original colour seems a better option?

Let me know fellas

cheers

Do it. Buy the block out black and spray it matt black ricer style. You can always paint it the correct colour with spray packs.

you mean spray it with the correct colour later or just do the correct colour straight away?

How hard would it be to find 27G (greeny blue) colour for my 87 sierra!
is it expensive to buy paint?

Cheers

A darkish blue sierra would look great with a black bonnet, in my opinion. If it looks cr@p then spray it later. Won't have to be an exact color match, as I bet your paint has faded differently on all bits of the body.
$100 is a good price for a good bonnet.

Go the black first as you will have to anyway i think to spray your colour. Is yours metallic? similar colour to the 91's

If u dont have access to a spray booth or airgun, u can but the pressure pack mixed to your colour for about $15 i think. 2 cans i am guessing would do a bonnet and then a clear coat on top.

cheers

I spent 80 bucks on a "killrust" paint (golden yellow) and sprayed my whole ute. Came up a treat with the added bonus that rust is kept at bay....sort of.

Buy paint stripper and remove all the old paint, paint rust convertor and sand where nessesary then paint with Black coloured auto primer.

Trust me it's worth a little extra effort and gives you a good base for the later colour

when i go in to get my paint mixed.. well they match it to the fade of the other panels next to the bonnet?

it is a metallic paint will that cost more?

Shouldnt i try and sand the paint off? or its better to use paint striper and then sand it down?

cheers

They will eye match it, it wont cost much, just get a spay can mixed up, paint some primer over the bonnet you are buying, then paint it the right colour.

AFAIK the early bonnet wont fit on 1.3s as its missing a lump in the middle for the engine block.

I have the exact same colour zook as you, and I have a matt black fibreglass bonnet on mine, and it looks great. (helps heaps to if you have roof mounted spotties) If you send me your e-mail address I will send you some pics. I got an ARB sticker, and a metallic blue SUZUKI sticker to break it up a bit...
