GQ Exhaust upgrade

Post by Wotto »

Hi everyone!! I need a new exhaust due to numerous holes in the stock one, and have been quoted $850 for hurricane extractors and a 2 1/2" mandrel bent system fitted. (uses current cat converter). I thought this was all well and good, until alot of other exhaust shops tried to steer me away from 2 1/2" to 2 1/4" for some reason.??? Also are the mandrel bends necessary as i heard they were a weaker bend than a press bend. Its for a 4.2L EFi with dual fuel if that makes any difference. Any comments greatly appreciated

What were their reasons?

In something as low performance as a patrol, IMHO not worth it.....

the performance difference is hardly noticable between press bend and mandrel bends. Car does rev out a little quicker in the top end ie 3900+rpm but then hey thats revvin it pretty hard. Also if you drive the sh*t out of your rig then the mandrel bends make you run a little cooler as the exhaust flow is a little better. My advice unless its a comp truck or you drive the hell out of your car 90+% of the time then go press bend system cheaper to start with and cheaper to fix if you stuff it

they said the 2 1/2" was too free flowing and needed to be stemmed by a bigger muffler. Also the quote that i got for the mandrel bent system was cheaper than the press bent system quotes by $400 ( from Liverpool exhausts). and current cheapest. I think its cheaper cos they manufacture the hurricane extractors in-house. Other places wanted $700 for extractors alone.

I have had 4 GQ's now and have fitted extractors and exhausts to all of them. All have had a 2 1/2 inch pipe. Breath and perform sweet. Just got quotes for my new one, started at $630 up to $900. For complete system with extractors. $630 sounds good I think.

Gday Mate.I have a petrol 4.2 gq and I got right price on moss st to fit extractors and 2 1/2 exhaust and I think I paid in the 500s for it.Dont know where you are but if your in brissy give them a bell.
I havnt looked back ,sounds better and goes better too.
No need for mandrel bends either. Pressed bends are good enough for a 4x4 application in my opinion.

I got my entire 2.5" Straight through system with Extractors for $600 at Carline Mufflers.

They did the extractors, 2.5" system (only 1 bend in it to go over the axel) and muffler.

Been running better than ever with this setup

I have used the same guy for 8 years on all my cars and 4wds and got a price for the new one, over the years he has always been by far the cheapest. 18 months ago I got a system and extractors of him for $595. (cheap) but when i asked him about this one he quoted me about $850. WTF. So I thought i would ring around and compare. The $630 quote was from a guy in Dapto (wollongong). Teds mufflers. sounded good. Worth the 20-30 dollar drive down from Liverpool?

Also mine is 4.2 EFI.
