if i pull out a sals centre, when putting it back in do i have to set it up, or is it just a bolt in and forget job? (assuming it was right originally)

If it is doing back into the same housing with the same bearings and bearing shims then it is fine.
Although the manual says you need a spreader, you actually only need gentle pressure from a couple of tyre levers to remove, and a leather/rubber hammer to refit.
