Turbo pipes

Post by muttley »

My inlet and outlet rubber pipes on the turbo have become really soft. On really hot days like last Sunday out at Landcruiser, I believe they are being sucked closed a bit. Apparently, after speaking to Dave at 4x4 Excellence (shameless plug  ), this is common for the Patrol. Sometimes they even suck nice neat little round bits of rubber out of the pipes

Apart from the expensive silicone pipe fix, or the aluminium pipe route, would it be possible to put a sturdy spring inside the pipe to keep it from being sucked in. A mate has told me that he has seen it done on other types of pipes, something to do with the radiator I think. If the spring was the right size and made of strong stuff that wouldn't collapse on itself, would this be feasible?

Any thoughts on this theory? I am probably trying to invent the wheel again here, but I havnt really done much under the bonnet before. :?

It is done with heater hoses and the likes... to keep the shape when a bend occurs... the ones I've seen are called 'Unicoil'.
Not sure what size they go up to...
Have you thought of just replacing with new stock ones.. the ones now might be affected by the heat and stuff...

I thought about it and have to get a price yet, but just thinking that it may just happen again. Especially if I get a lot of off-roading in over the hotter months, like I intend

I had the same problem with my 80 series not too long ago.
When full load it got to just under 3000 revs when it would loose all power and blow sh!t loads of black smoke out the back to the point where I copuldn't see the car behind me. It was the inlet rubber hose on the turbo sucking closed. When I spoke to some people I was told in extreme cases it can do some expensive damage.
I bought a new inlet hose and the internal spring all up it was about $60 and it fixed all my problems.

What price do you put on peace of mind. I'd suck up the hurt and get some silicon hose to replace it. It may be a little expensive to you but it's cheaper than rebuilding an engine.
