Can you use the same oil in both gearbox and diff? I went up to get some oil this morning, and they guy there recommended using a SAE80w-90 oil in the diffs...but this is the same oil I use in the gearbox. I would of thought that the two would of used different oils (the diffs using a thicker oil)...is this correct?
If it matters its for a HJ60.

I use 75/90w gear oil in my box, transfer and front open diff... and Limslip 90/140w oil in my rear LSD.. bit higher viscosity for offroad conditions.
Nev, 5L to change the lot is great!! Must be small diffs My diffs take 1.5L each! and my gearbox uses what you use in the lot No wonder its so heavy

have a look in some of the books the oil ppl put out. some of the lsd oil will work fine in open diffs and gear boxes. and if you have an auto you will often find dextronIII is over and above what is needed in your auto and at half the price. 4speed auto in the ford for example the fluid recomended by ford it just about double the price of dexIII and in 10.000k the ford fluid is black burnt and fucked. use the dextron and 20.000k and its still red and shifts tops. at the end of the day i recon go to some one like repco cause thay have all the cross refance books or see a trans shop and ask them. fark long post about oil. im not going to get in to the advantages/disadvantages of useing auto trans in manuals
range rover & series one landy!
I use the same in both gearbox, transfer, front and rear diffs and the diffs are air lockers. It all works perfect. my diff takes 4.5 litres of oil for one.
If you have trouble selecting gears when the beast is cold you should try one of the lighter grade oils such as 75/90. Or even Auto trans fluid.

I ought to report you to the f#cking RSPCA neville.
henry, thanks for the info. what diffs do you have that hold 4.5l each hell thats heaps
i wonder if having a thinner oil in the diffs would stop alot of the diff oil mist being sprayed when the lockers are disengaged as it would be more inclined to drain out rather than clog
but why do they recomend the 90/140 limslip 4 lockers anyway
